Yeah, but these sons of guns like it.
I am surrounded by guests.
How many hours of Star Trek is there exactly? I think there are some better things one could do with their time then memorizing all of that canon. Especially when so much of it has plot holes and inconsistencies.
Oh well…I’ll save my intense scrutiny for serious drama. Star Trek gets by on charm.
If a movie deserves to be picked over like a corpse at a Tibetan sky burial, can I direct everyone’s attention to that fetid ,festering trailer for the new Jack Black caveman flick I was subjected to pre-Trek?
Annie, her veins opened. Ack.
No it didn’t. This is just what happened next: Kirk and Spock do good at Kittomer, some other movies are made, then there is a time travel incident that actually has consequences. This doesn’t destroy canon, it is canon. With warp drive activated by big chrome levers. How cool is that?
A couple thoughts:
- When we saw the Starfleet cadet from the bar who turned up later as a security guard on the Enterprise, I recall thinking “Aww, not everybody gets to be a starship captain.”
2)The Romulans put up with so much retarded shit from the ship designing people who work on Trek movies. First the Scimitar, now the Narada? It’s bad enough that leading up to Nemesis, in 40 years of Trek, the Romulans only ever got something like five different ship designs (TOS Battlecruiser, TOS Bird of Prey, TNG Warbird, TNG Scout, DS9 Shuttle). In Nemesis, they finally get a cool new Warbird (what, the Romulans have no support ships?), but they also get burdened with the first in a hopefully shortlived series of retarded spindly looking ships.
Just saying.
Welcome to the Straight Dope, Shawn1767.
And welcome, Frylock!
And this movie had charm in spades. I’m a long time Trekkie[sup]1[/sup], and I thought this movie had something that had been lacking in many of the previous ones.
It was fun.
[1] Trekkie - not Trekker. I played with my Star Trek toys as a kid.
Wait, this is based on some sort of TV show?
Now now in fairness… Scotty has been used for comic relief earlier than that.
You recall… “It’s Green” or “They called the Enterprise a garbage scow” Or a few other choice occasions where Scotty was less than serious.
Yes I know there were more moments when Scotty was heroic, but those where in moments of command or when in his engine room during moments of stress.
I have a feeling New Scotty may still have his moments (not in this film mind you… the explosion solution was dumb… but you did notice he wasn’t playing it as goofy)
I don’t think there’s a way for this universe to be reconciled with the continuity that began in WRATH OF KHAN and continues through TNG & DS9. But so what?
If you think it’s a good story, as some of y’all do, then you should be able to enjoy it either way.
If you think it’s a BAD story, then whether it’s canon won’t help.
“Spock’s Brain” blows chunks. So does the TNG episode in which Picard & Co. become children. I’m sure there’s a DS9 episode that’s pretty bad, though frankly I can’t think of any that are as bad as those two. But departing from canon is not a reason, in itself, to hate the movie. The mere fact of hiring new actors and using new sets invalidates much of canon.
Wasn’t Sam the kid who was hitchhiking while young Kirk was joyriding?
The hitchhiker was originally intended to be Kirk’s brother, but for some reason he became “Johnny” in the finished film.
The one where Quark cross-dresses is much, much worse than either of those episodes.
shudder
According to Wikipedia, there are 547.05 hours (22 days, 19 hours, and 3 minutes) of live action Trek, and 8.07 hours (8 hours and 4 minutes) of animated Trek. Doctor Who, its closest competitor, has 374.6 (15 days,14 hours, and 36 minutes) hours.
I love Wikipedia in all its nerdy glory.
I’m actually looking forward to this.
Really? What an… odd… choice.
Whew! Me too, I though I was alone.
Star Trek 90210 is a satire of the film Galaxy Quest.
I thought so too, but then it occurred to me that they now have a clean slate should they decide to introduce Kirk’s brother in a sequel. Not that they would be obligated to use the same actor in any case, but it means one less potential discontinuity for nitpickers.
No less strange than Col Trelayne being a dead ringer for Koloth.
