Star Trek -- the "I saw it" thread **SPOILERS**

I got to post #2 by Half Man Half Wit, and agree with most everything he says, including not liking the movie. I don’t see why so many people are loving the film. I’m glad others liked it, I just don’t understand why.

They get shown live. Local news loooooves chases.

Ah yes, Simon “the odd numbers films are crap” Pegg :stuck_out_tongue:

Perhaps, but while I enjoyed what we got, I’m not sure the writers (or the audience at large) would have been up for that wait.

Wel then, how about a montage? A montage of Kirk as Ensign, then as Lieutenant, and finally getting his Captain’s stripes…

That would be all artie like real cinema.

“You gotta have a MONTAGE!”

<cue dramatic, overblown music>

I guess if I had to summarize, I liked the characters, I liked the look for the most part, but didn’t like the story that much.

That’s my take on the movie, too. The story was dumb, but I loved the characters enough to overlook its inconsistencies.

Kind of like how I overlook cplant’s shortcomings because of our history together. :stuck_out_tongue:

Who is this guy?

Other people get a montage, Kirk gets a MANtage

I just have to post this again: http://kal3b.com/images/star-trek-captain-james-t-kirk-motivational-posters.jpg

Did it just so happen that Kirk landed near the alternate Spock? Was there a good reason for that other than both of them being in the same relative place in space and time? Alternate Spock told Kirk not to tell his old/other self about him… so he could learn a lesson? Wouldn’t there be too much at stake here?

I could see them both being dumped on the same planet…Spock so he could see the death of Vulcan, Kirk as he was kicked off the ship at near the same geography.

Kirk being chased down the same Fjord that Spock’s having a weenie roast in?

Not a [redacted] chance!

It’s stuff like that which made me roll my eyes… no offence to those who liked it. It’s that I’m relatively new to she ST franchise, I saw some old TOS episodes, TNG, then ‘First Contact’, and I think ‘Generations’ before that. I wasn’t too interested in the franchise until I went to rottentomatoes.com it was held in well regard by most critics.

As soon as I saw them getting Mrs. Kirk, in labor off a ship while being attacked as her husband speaks to her before his final moments, I told myself; ‘Ok, that was cliche, but I get that it help Kirk to be the man he is in the present’. But it then just seemed like the trite, over-the-top absurdness never ended in the movie. It was just one thing after another. The whole time I was sitting there thinking; ‘this is what critics almost unanimous about?’ I was thinking the same thing about the Scotty-in-a-Tube in as said in post #2. Why would I feel any danger or urgency for these characters when the movie never set’s any boundaries? I don’t know much science, but you don’t need to in order to find flaws in this movie.

I did like a few things. I liked young Spock, (not Kirk, although I didn’t hate him as some others have, perhaps because I’m not a huge fan). I mean the dude that played the doctor… (“Bones” or “McCoy”?) looked and acted exactly like what I can remember about his character. The guy who played him was made for that role.

Yeah I’m not so sure that these two would find each other, even if it they were on the same planet, there. And like **Half Man **said… him being bumped there was drastic in the first place.

Once again I find myself defending the movie…how odd.

Anywhistle, I can fanwank it as being consistent with the theme of destiny. I think we’re meant to take it that the time-stream was trying to repair itself. Though I should think that the obliteration of Vulcan would be a far greater priority for the Norns to concern themselves with.

But the Trek movies are full of ridiculous coincidences. Consider Trek VI, for instance.

Oh, and why wouldn’t anyone object to Kirk taking command after instigating a fight with Spock, SEEMINGLY for no reason but to just be first in command?

But I thought this was going to be a ‘good movie’, Not all critics can be fans of the original. Why are these mistakes ignored? I’m not a smart guy and I can’t see past them. Why are so many so forgiving. I don’t get it.

I don’t like the movie. My initial post in this thread was so ridiculously over the top that I considered going back in time to stop myself from ever submitting it; unfortunately, I expended so much mental energy on hyperbole that I no longer remember how to operate my time machine.

I also no longer remember how to read Linear B. Learn from my mistakes, kids!

Anyway, no one objects to Kirk taking command because everyone on board the Enterprise–no, everyone in the Federation–nay, everyone in the entire galaxy, including the members of the Q Continuum–were turned into morons by 60s!Spock time travel jaunt. I’m quite certain that they give blowjobs at Starbucks in this reality.

And now I’ve forgotten everything I learned in Diffy Q. Damn it!

Erda to Wotan,* Das Rheingold*, Scene 4.

“Give it up, Wotan. This is some really bad shit.”
Erda is actually the Earth Mother and not one of the Norns as I recall, but we are after all invoking Poetic License.

What’s the deal with the telekinesis stuff Spock 2 used on Kirk to tell his story? Do they have that power in TOS, or did I miss something in the movie?
