Starfield - November 11, 2022. How excited are you?

I’ve you’ve played Elite Dangerous, you’re probably familiar with the website Inara. They now have a Starfield section.

My main’s Star Eagle took off without her shortly after landing at Akila City. Fast traveled to the cockpit after visiting some vendors – and discovered the ship is under the terrain, nearly 2½ km from the landing area!

I’m really pissed off. I played for about 3 hours today, did a major quest, got a level, found an amazing new pistol that did twice the damage my last one did.

Then the game froze and I had to close out. Logged back in and it said there was a problem synching data. I lost all of it. Every single damn thing I did. It doesn’t matter that I saved diligently, it erased all my saves. WTF MICROSOFT?! Fix your shit.

This makes me wary of playing anymore. If it can just be erased because they have bad servers, why bother?

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Are you sure the saves are nowhere to be found?

I’m playing the Steam version, so I don’t know if the save format is the same, but mine all have names like this:

You might want to scour your disk in case they ended up somewhere else. Dunno if the long hex code (a UUID) is different between machines or not, but if you search for Save*.sfs, it should find something.

Since my “disk” is a cloud server off somewhere there’s little chance of that. It’s all Xbox Cloud Gaming.

One thing I’ve discovered in playing around with shipbuilding, is that adding more windows to the ship really makes it feel nicer. None of the ships I’ve bought or found ever seem to have enough windows!

Or cargo space. I almost always add a lot of cargo, and it always tells me I’m losing out on maneuverability, but so far, that hasn’t seemed to have a major impact on how well I do in space battles, so it’s Cargo Away!

Oh, you’re fully in the cloud. I was thinking you were using Gamepass and just had your saves synched. Ugh. Sorry, I’ve got nothing.

Yep! I put windows on almost all spare nodes. Sides, top, and bottom.

I just finished the Crimson Fleet quest again (where you’re in the EM cloud) and it was cool to just stand by a window and look out.

I can now fly Class C ships. I can’t find anything for sale I REALLY like, but that may also be because I forget where to buy ships. I think Taiyo sells a good one in Neon.

Build it from scratch. Cheaper than buying, plus you get exactly what you want. Pick some junk captured ship in your fleet (doesn’t have to be class C), delete everything, and start from a blank slate.

Exactly. Well, technically it’s impossible to build something “from scratch”, but as you said you can start with any existing ship and start all over. I’ve never seen a ship for sale that wasn’t crappy.

Since I like how pirates react to seeing “THE MANTIS!!!” my ship is just a complete rebuild (and rename) of the Razorleaf. Well, my main ship. I still have the Frontier and refitted that with EM weapons when I want to capture a ship (or have to for a mission). I don’t have room on my real ship for EM weapons, I go all particle beams and love it, but having a “pacifist” ship is handy to swap to when needed. I am also considering a bloated whale just for cargo runs but I haven’t yet found a need for it.

I bought a Narwhal class. I don’t think I have the right skills yet to rebuild a ship. It’s huge and has everything but I was a little disappointed the inside looks shitty and it was full of junk.

I did break from my usual naming convention of “fictional spaceships” and decided to call it

Sarah Morgan

All of the junky interiors are modular hallways and bays that can be replaced with different ones for different aesthetics.

Sure, but you’d think Taiyo wouldn’t have left all this crap behind. When I bought a new car they don’t leave an old coffee in the cupholder. The place looks like shit. I paid 400,000 credits for this thing and it’s as messy as my three year old Kia.

Not longer after buying Sarah Morgan I and Andreja murdered some more Ecliptic guys and stole their ship, an Ecliptic Bayonet. It was vastly inferior to our ships, so I sold it. I’m disappointed at how little you make from that; it’s not as lucrative as selling the crap the dead Ecliptics had on them, which makes no sense at all. It’s disappointing, because stealing ships would be a fun profit strategy.

Yeah, I was also disappointed by the need to register a stolen ship, thus negating most of the potential profit, but I guess if you could clear a shitload of money every time you stole a ship it would be that much sooner before money becomes worthless (as is the case in every Bethesda game).

Yeah, my main picked up one of those after it landed. I tried editing it into something useful, after selling contraband at the Den, but ended up not doing anything other than selling it Akila City.

I probably should have waited until I came across a demand for something before setting up an outpost. The Stroud-Eklund Staryard in Narion wants 2000 units of chlorine. I wasn’t really doing anything with the outpost on Io so I deleted that and started a chlorine/lithium mining operation on Luyten’s Rock, to which Lin & Heller have been assigned. I would have preferred chlorine/aluminum for self-sufficient construction but got tired of looking for a suitable place which would yield that combination.

Particularly in a game in which actual piracy is built into the game engine, and you have the option to actually join the pirate fleet. At least let me sell captured ships to the pirates for a steeply discounted price!

My current ship started as the one you get as a reward for the Stroud-Ecklund storyline. I pushed for the “all the bells and whistles” option, so when I got it, it was pretty wildly overdone. I immediately started adding even more stuff to it, and re-named it “Homer’s Folly”, in memory of the episode of The Simpsons where Homer bankrupted his brother’s car company by designing a ridiculous car.

I did the same thing, loaded it with roughly one thousand turrets, and flew it until end game.

For what it’s worth, I had the same thing happen and lost about six hours of gaming. Only happened once out of the 200 hours or so I put in, though. Part of the growing pains of cloud gaming, I guess.
