Starfleet Academy

That second trailer looks far more melodramatic than 90210.

And even then starting in season 3 the adventures of the Defiant off running around the galaxy became half the show.

I’ve now watched the first two episodes, and I didn’t hate it. It is definitely a kind of generic CW-type YA show wedged into the Star Trek universe, and there were some weak spots but it isn’t actively awful. It managed to go the whole 135 minutes without whisper-talking, crying, therapy sessions, or Starfleet officers having group hugs.

I haven’t watched the show yet, but I plan to. Mostly because Tig Notaro (who plays Jett Reno) is awesome and was the best thing about Star Trek: Discovery. (Low bar, I know, as that show was pretty weak, but still, every scene that she was in was fantastic because of her.) I got the impression that she would have more of a role in this show which I find very encouraging.

Can we get an episode that is an in-depth examination of the rules for (and consequences of…) inter-species synthohol pong? Do Klingons have to get drunk before playing, to offset their metabolism?

She gets a little screen time in the 2nd episode, but not a lot.

Well that stinks!

At least one brief reference each to Lower Decks and Prodigy. A Brikar (the big rock person species from Prodigy) and an exocomp named Almond Basket (named only in the credits, voiced by the Peanut Hamper actress).

I saw the exocomp flying by, and laughed.

The first time I missed that there was dialog, and that it was in the turbolift with the hologram, the Lanthonite, and the Jemhalingon. Note around 9:50 to 10:00 in episode 2.

The last few posts (clicked through spoilers) are encouraging to me.

I loved Lower Decks. Prodigy, not so much, but it’s not like I hated it, I just didn’t like it and couldn’t watch past a handful of episodes (though I really tried).

I will see if I have time to watch at least the first episode today.

Another laugh, one of the background cadets is a Cheronian. The black on one side and white on the other species from TOS, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield s3e15. Which now feels very hamfisted, but was pushing the TV envelope at the time.

Loved Lower Decks, also the only Star Trek show my daughter likes. Prodigy did work for me and I gave up sooner than you.

First long episode of Academy was uneven but overall worked.

She’s a black on the right side one, which was the oppressive group on TOS.

I think they got over that, it was a thousand ago I believe. At least I hope they did.

I believe TNG ended in the year 2370, and Academy starts in 3191. So not quite a thousand years but close; over 800 years at least.

Looking at it from our perspective, that would be the equivalent of going from around the year 1200 to today’s time in terms of societal change. That’s a lot of time. Who knows what might have happened to their culture?

What’s the gap from TOS to TNG? The episode was final season TOS.
So probably closer to 900?

Crap you’re right.

The gap from the end of TOS to the end of TNG is almost exactly 100 years (2269-2370). So yeah, add 100 to the time gap. And you’re now comparing today to 1100.

I thought all but two members of the entire species were wiped out, and they were both male. How’d they swing that?

And why the hell do we have a female Jem’Hadar on this show? They need to explain that to my satisfaction, as a DS9 fan.

It’s not a mathematically perfect name.
