[A short but cool video clip](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUREX8aFbMs). The guy with the camera had it pointed right at the volcano at the moment when it erupted; you can even see the shockwave moving across the sky before it hits. Fortunately they were far enough way that it apparently didn’t do any harm. ---

I love how, with the proliferation of handheld cameras these days, a lot of things that used to just happen in nature usually without anyone around are being captured on film ---

So the blast appears to start 12 seconds in and the shock appears to hit the camera at 25 seconds in. How far away does that put the camera? ---

With speed of sound being ~340 m/s you’d be looking at a distance of 4km. ---

I surprised you couldn’t see any effect of the shock traveling over the water toward the camera person, not even ripples.
