[From this sad, sad thead](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=11331998#post11331998).

Resolved: **Starving Artist** is really, really, really stupid.

Oh, sure, of course NONE of those things existed prior to 1950, uh-huh.

NO ONE ever heard of syphilis before. Or opium dens. Or cocaine. For sure there were no brothels. The rise of organized crime during prohibition? Didn’t happen. All those lynchings of black men, not to mention the exploitation of Asian workers? Never happened. Crime? What crime? It was invented in 1968. The lawlessness of the Old West? Pure fiction, I’m sure. Innocent people being blacklisted or worse for supposed associations with communism? BLAH-BLAH-BLAH I can’t HEAR YOU. Living in fear during the Cold War? What Cold War? It was a time of blissful peace and posterity and civility for all!

What’s that? People have been trying to end pregnancies as long as people have been getting pregnant? BLAH-BLAH-BLAH! No, no, no! It’s all the FAULT OF ROE V. WADE!

Oh wait, I forgot: in **Starving Artist** ’s world, scoiety was more civil when trying to get an abortion often resulted in the death of the mother.

> [@](#):
>
> … not to mention belligerent personal behavior.

You really do live in a fantasy world, don’t you? By all means, continue to ignore history completely. Please never read anything, unless it was written by Robert Bork or Ann Coulter. Stay far away from such lesser thinkers on social matters such as Mark Twain, Sinclair Lewis, Sherwood Anderson.

Actually, just don’t read anything. At all. Conjure your own reality, feel outrage at the fiction you’ve created in your mind. It will help you lose weight. It won’t help you succeed at fucking that hot blonde in the mud, though.

By the way, would dueling be considered belligerent? But that never happened before 1968, right?

How about lynchings? Never happened before 1968.

Pogroms? Not before 1968. Oh, wait did you mean civility existed only in the U.S.?

Ok, so then:

Concentration camps for legal residents and citizens of the U.S.? Never!

Forced death-march resettlement of indigenous peoples? Never!

You know, it’s true! If I don’t do any research–and I just make up stuff I want to be true–I can also assert that there was no crime or meanness or people being quarrelsome at all before 1968! WOW.

I am so smart! I am so smart! S-M-R-T! D’oh! I mean …

Nice straw man. Did it make you feel all tough when you knocked it over?

Can you provide a shred of evidence that anyone ever made this argument? Oh wait, I forgot, you eschew evidence the way moles eschew living above ground.

> The real reason is that lefties of that time wanted to do away with existing standards so they could dress like scuzzbugs, do drugs, fuck in the mud at rock festivals, and still find jobs and not get shit about their long hair, clothes and drugs from the rest of society.

This is hilarious! What, did that girl you hit on back at Woodstock turn you down hard? “Fuck in the mud.” Wow, your issues are impressive. Also, I’m impressed at your display of civil language. Way to set an example!

“Long hair”? You have issues with long hair? _Seriously_?

About those drugs, of which none existed before Woodstock: absolutely, drugs have caused _so much more_ damage to society than those nice, wholesome legal drugs alcohol and nicotine. Oh, wait …

> [@](#):

Oooh, another straw man. I bet you’re feelin’ real tough, now.

Wow, tossing a bone to the people who actually got it right. Nice work.

But then…

> … but it is also true that most of it was introduced during the more polite and civil time that existed prior to the late sixties. (Which, of course, demonstrates even more clearly that creating a crude, classless society like exists today was not necessary in order to correct issues of racism.)

More delusional propaganda right out of _The Birth of a Nation_. My patriotism swells with pride, knowing that our proudest civil moments coincide with race rioting over civil rights, McCarthyism, and fear of nuclear annihilation.

Or, wait, did you mean some other decade besides the 1950s in America? Did you mean the 1240s? On some island in the Pacific ocean? Where some ancestor of yours lived in peace and civility, by himself, in a cave, blindfolded, with his fingers stuffed in his ears? Ah yes, that was a peaceful moment. You, too, can share that peace…

> It’s a popular meme among the left, anxious to defend what it’s done to life in this country that it was all necessary to fight racism, but it’s neither a correct nor honest one.

And here we have a repeat of his oft-bashed straw man, which is sadly losing its ability to be an effective fetish now that you’ve knocked all the stuffing out of it.

My dog similarly likes to lash out at stuffed objects, and rip all that fuzz out. Gives her a feeling of power, it does. My dog still lives more in the real world than you do, my loony friend.

We also have an egregious misuse of the word “meme,” for which I am penalizing you 15 points.

Stay anachronistic and live in fiction, you stupid old bat.

**Starving Artist** has no issues with long hair. Some of his best friends have had long hair, as has he himself at one time (relatively speaking, that is, I still had _some_ standards). Many people during the late sixties had lots of issues with it, on both sides, and it was the conflict over that that my statement refers to.

For such an allegedly smart board, it’s amazing how often people read into posts things that are simply not there.

Oh, wait…no, it’s not! That’s how to fight issues you can’t debate honestly.

Another way to dishonestly argue the issues is to try to minimize or marginalize issues you don’t like to face by painting your opponent in some sort of dismissive light…in this case, age.

But it will gain you little. The fact is that I lived for twenty years in this country the way it was before you guys fucked it all up (:D) and I know whereof I speak. I didn’t get my view of the country pre-1968 from a revisionist history book or educational system.

I know how people acted then and I know how they act now, and then was better. My guess is if you asked a group of middle-aged and older blacks whether they felt safer and happier in those days than they do now, the answer would be yes. Liberalism, in its unthinking and eager embrace of every negative thing to come out of black culture, has contributed to a very large degree to the crime, drugs and gangland misery that has been the lot of many blacks in this country.

But of course, Polio was a sigificant issue in those days, and cancer was a virtual death sentence. Do people think I long for a return to that also? It makes about as much sense as claiming that because I dislike what has happend to society since then I want a return to racism.

That’s right, dumbass. **They** didn’t want to get shit over their long hair, which is what they got at the time from virtually everyone over the age of thirty. How does that become my issue? I was only twenty at the time, and ever grew my hair to the extent that I got shit about it from a teacher or two. But I didn’t call people names because they didn’t like it, and I understood where they were coming from.

It’s been my experience that conservatives are much more willing to see the point of view of their opponents than their opponents are to see the point of view of conservatives. It’s that old “Conservatives think liberals have bad ideas; liberals think conservatives are bad people” thing.

Ironic, isn’t it, that it’s actually conservatives who are more fluid in their beliefs and opinions than are liberals, who are the most inflexible, demanding and angry of all society’s members.

And now I have to go to work. I’m afraid you’ll have to call yourself an idiot for the rest of the afternoon, **Knorf**.

That fucking in the mud really hurt your feelings, huh?

Look, in all seriousness, you’re advocating a cliche. The “it was better back in the old days” cliche. And you’re ignoring mountains of evidence that it _wasn’t_ better. People _did not_ behave better. There were difference societal expectations, which apparently you look upon fondly with rose-colored glasses. But people are people. There were, and are, bad people. There were, and are, good people.

What you’re basically doing is extrapolating a couple, time-passed fond memories as evidence for how society was “more civil.” That’s just silly.

If you can’t find a polite, and civil group of peers to hang out with, that’s your own fault. Despite your silly ranting, there actually _are_ still civil and polite people, all over the place. I think your partisanship and prejudice are causing you to fail to see that.

In any case, if civility and politeness are so important, why not set an example yourself? How _you_ live your life is far more important than your ranting about you disapprove of the lives of others.

Yes yes, we know. The Negroes knew their place, the skirts – the frails, dames, broads, and chicks – were safely in the kitchen, and the only Chinese people you ever need encounter ran a take-out restaurant. Life was so much better then for white, bigoted, middle-class ignoramuses.

Ah, yes, let’s trot out an old cliche, toss it about, and hope it sticks to something.

I’ll tell you what, **Starving Artist** is right in that is was much easier to get a ham sandwich back in the day. I said, IT WAS MUCH EASIER TO GET A HAM SANDWICH. **GET IN THE KITCHEN YOU FUCKING BITCH OR I’M CALLING MCCARTHY!**

Anyway, people were probably marginally more polite, if by polite, you mean following stupid rules of etiquette laid down by the conservative establishment (ironically in a way to bring back _their_ percieved polite society (the victorians). However, people were not nearly as considerate of others in a meaningful way. But, I too long for the days when I could fondle the steno pool ladies and drive while downing a few martinis. And I hate hippies because they are douchebags. (True story, bro)

I guess I will accept **SA** ’s claim as true if he defines polite as “following trivial and arbitrary rules of etiquette that had no actual bearing on making society a better place”.

Pinkies up, bitch.
