state-mandated medications: a violation of parent's rights?

Sorry, but the MMR-autism bit really gets me going.

I’ll let the CDC site do the talking http://www.cdc.gov/nip/vacsafe/concerns/autism/autism-mmr.htm#2

The reason it gets me going so is that the vaccine conspiricy theorists keep changing the accusation. It causes it right away. No, it is a delayed response. And so on. There is no evidence that the MMR is related to autism. I can understand why a parent of an autistic child is attracted to a simple answer. Straw men are nice to have, and the reality that autism is a complex syndrome with no simple answer and likely many contributing factors is in no way as appealing.

Money is becoming available for research to really understand the root causes of autism in all of its complexity. Clearly it has a prenatal onset. Incredible work is being done. But much money is being diverted defending good medicine from bad science. And the people who should be advocating the loudest to get the money spent on the basic science research are instead contributing to the diversion of funds by buying into science by the paper in Brisbane (or 60 minutes, whathaveyou)

BTW one of my practice partners has an autistic kid. She feels the same way as I do.
