Hi, I am wondering what are the actual statistical odds of getting HIV from an infected source from a one time exposure of receptive unprotected anal sex? I have read from 1-70 to 1-200 chance. I am wondering what some of you guys think are the odds. Worst case scenario here. I am talking about purely stats here and odds wise. Thanks ---

The odds are different depending on male on male, male on female, which partner has it, viral load of the infected person, was there an ejaculation, etc. Best bet would to get tested after the waiting period, and use a condom next time. ---

About 1 in 100, per the CDC: [http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/policies/law/risk.html](http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/policies/law/risk.html). It may be higher if either participant has had a root canal, though. ---

I am just seriously wondering what the real odds are. I mean 1/100 is not that bad. So if my biggest fear of what happened really happened then I have a 1-3% chance of being infected. I mean those are not horrible odds actually. Most likely I would be ok that means. You learn lessons in life. My lesson from this is do not drink at a youth hostel with a bunch of strangers in your room. I learned that lesson. I also learned not to drink much at all. I am getting better at life guys. But 1/100 odds are not too bad 🙂 ---

For one thing, a doctor might be able to confirm if you were raped (though it might be too late now). Seriously – why didn’t you go to a doctor? ---

Theze are things, as well as remembering protection, to consider when planning ahead. ---

1/100 only if you know the other party has HIV. If not, many, many times less. And I disagree with others. Don’t go to a doctor, there is no reason to. Get on with your life. ---

Sigh. How many people told you that you should go to the doctor ASAP and start taking anti-retrovirals? If you had done that the day after the event in question, that would greatly reduce the chances of transmission, to something like 1 in 2,000. If the HIV+ partner (I realize “partner” is not appropriate for non-consensual sex, but I’m talking in generalities) is taking drugs, and has an undetectable viral load, AND the HIV- partner had gone in for meds, then he would have a very nearly zero chance of getting HIV. Based on past behavior, I think the odds of the OP getting good advice are about 92%, but the odds of his taking it are 0%. If there were any way for the odds to be lower than 0%, they would be. ---
