> Completely agree, which is why these guys need to get real and give the hometown fans something to cheer for. The HR Derby has absolutely zero consequences. I support KC fans booing Canoe.

Yeah. Part of me did find it a little obnoxious at first, but then I realized I’m getting worked up about the silliest event in professional sports. Hell, Cano himself probably found the whole thing hilarious.

[Jeff Sullivan](http://mlb.sbnation.com/2012/7/9/3148165/home-run-derby-2012-robinson-cano/in/2911961) more or less sums up my final opinion on the matter. This whole kerfuffle is roughly as important as who started the Celebrity All-Star Softball Game, and significantly less important than who starts the All-Star Game itself (This Time, It Matters™). Which is still not saying much.

> If the decision is that critical, MLB should mandate that a hometown guy has to compete in the derby. That should be great the next time a Kansas City-type team hosts the game and their only representative is a relief pitcher. Cano didn’t know which Royal was going to make the team and he picked three of the four biggest hitters in the contest, so he did very will with the job they gave him.

I actually like that the fans have done what they can to regulate this. Bud Selig doesn’t need to put yet another personal stamp on baseball.

You know, I wouldn’t be opposed to a home team HR Derby contestant even if he didn’t make the All Star team. The Derby is the second most meaningless spectacle in sports (nothing means less than the NBA dunk contest). Is there currently a rule that contestants must be All Stars?

Tantrum, regulation, same diff.

That’s my understanding.

Joe Posnanski, writer for Sports Illustrated (who, admitedly, is from Kansas City), wrote on this subject better than I ever could. Worth a read:

Must have been a bit frustrating for KC fans to watch Melky hit that HR in the ASG. To think, for him they got perhaps the worst starting pitcher in baseball so far this season! If Melky (and Sanchez) keeps this up it might pass Jermaine Dye for Neifi Perez for worst Royals trade of the past 20 years (although, to be fair, Sanchez for Cabrera looked decent in foresight, Dye for Perez was idiotic at the time).
Did the fans have any complaints about the choices for the celebrity softball game?
Actually, yes. They booed the shit out of Bill Self. 😃

Cano has said he doesn’t mind the fans booing him but draws the line for the way they treated his family when they went to the rest rooms. If that is true, then there are some real classless fans in Kansas City (and unfortunately a lot of other places).
