I guess when you’ve spent as much time on your knees with your face in Dubya’s lap as most of the White House correspondents have, you take attacks on Bush personally. He is, after all, your “daddy.”

In short, this only confirms my opinion of the WH correspondents, whom I’ve always considered to be a group of total douchebags, for the most part.

From that article:

> [@](#):
>
> He promised to use mostly political material, though, along these lines: “They said we’re going to send jets to Israel this year, but what the hell would they do with a bunch of football players?” Iraq jokes, however, are out. “I do have a funny line on that,” he said, and he began to imitate the current President: “George W. Bush here. I tell you, I’m between I-raq and a hard place.”
>
> Little paused, and said, “That’s funny.

So funny that he has to remind us twice, I suppose.

Man, this guy is terrible. I’m 28, and I know _of_ Rich Little and what he does, but I’d never heard any of his jokes. Now that I have, I wish I hadn’t.

Then again, who wants to cover a group of total douchebags except another group of total douchebags?

It’s not really fair to lambaste the White House Correspondents for their choice of a comedian. They do need to work with the White House and don’t need to seek out opportunities to offend them. On the other hand, I think lambasting them for the shitty work they do on a day-to-day basis (particularly before the Iraq war started) is completely within bounds. It’s embarrassing that they’re either so spineless that they’re afraid of this White House, or that this White House really would shut them out over something like this. The good news is that their choice of Rich Little makes fun of itself.

Perhaps it was a typo and they really intended to invite Little Richard?

Anyone recall the WHC Dinner in which Don Imus lambasted Bill, Hillary & most of the room during the Clinton Administration? Then someone in the Administration asked that C-SPAN not re-run it, which resulted in C-SPAN, it seemed, running it almost every day for two weeks.

The next year, the Clintons were given Al Franken, whose main theme was “Mr. President, apparently, you like to eat a lot, and I thought perhaps we could have some gentle fun with that.”

They really should’ve twisted the knife and invited Carrot Top.

Or Gallagher. (He could tape pieces of paper that say “Iraq” or “Constitutional Freedoms” on the watermelons before he smashes them).

Which suggests that the White House correspondents lack spine generally, in a completely non-partisan way.

Also from that _New Yorker_ article. . .\*When asked to name a young comedian he admired, he responded, “Robin Williams. He’s just off the wall.”
\*

The New Yorker article found a nice way to harsh on him without coming right out and doing it.

(aside: I think it was the same edition had a real funny piece by Steve Martin. I couldn’t find it online, but it was 72 individual quotes from the “72 Virgins” that he gets after he dies.)
