Steven King: And other authors who keep you up at Night?

Now THAT’S weird you should mention it. I just finished Black Cross and was itching to read something else of his while I wait for my copy of Spandeau Phoenix, so I dug out The Quiet Game this afternoon–the only book by him that I didn’t finish. I’ve heard that it is one of his best so I’m giving it another try.

Some times I think SK is recycling his stories too much. Dreamcatcher was bleh and reminded me too much of The Tommyknockers. King should stay away from aliens.

But yes, when he’s good, I’ll keep reading and fall asleep with the book and wake up in the morning with one of the corners probing me in a hurtful way.

Terry Pratchett does that for me too. And speaking of which - time for bed and snuggling up with “The Science of DiscWorld, pt II”

“Phantoms” by Dean Koontz made me freak out at every little bump in the night the way Scooby and Shaggy always do!

I used to be a huge Dean Koontz fan, and I still read a lot of his stuff, but he’s been somewhat stale in recent times. I absolutely hated Sieze the Night. The first book in that storyline (Fear Nothing) was decent, but the second just sucked…I was bored out of my mind. Since then, I’ve found that about every other new book he releases is good, and the others are marginal. His best work is excellent, and Watchers is still one of the best books ever written in the Thriller genre.

Basically, I usually love his books that are not excessively supernatural…the ones with real people and real things. The supernatural ones are a crapshoot.

Jman… thank you! My mother and my mother in law swear he’s still great and frankly those sieze the night books drove me batty and Tic Toc! Please… and the last one where he spent a whole chapter on the plant! Lately the endings have been a bit too neatly tied up with pretty ribbons and bows. So sappy and contrived. Watchers is an amazing book too!
