Stinky dog assistance, please!

I’m from the midwest so I’ve definitely smelled skunked dogs and while this is almost as bad it’s difinitely not skunk. I’ve switched his food to my dog’s dry and we’ll see if this makes a difference. No clue how long that might take tho. Tried the dryer sheet thing too. He still reeks but with a hint of April freshness now…

Didn’t know she/he was Euro.

hey, she’s not.

I think… Used to be midwestern, NOW in Germany.

Maybe you need to give the dog a colonic irrigation to detoxify.

I figured somebody should get something out of the clean up incident. Your welcome to laugh about it.

Ah, I see clarification is in order. I was born and raised in Indiana and now work for the USG and am currently posted in Germany.

I must say, having spent the last 8 years in different parts of Europe (some nice, some not so), I didn’t know there weren’t skunks here. Not that I ever really thought about it much before.

Febreze?

I used to own a Argentine Dogo, and he stank no matter how often you bathed him. He was pure white with a greasy yellow streak down his back, from which the stink emanated . I’d wash him and it would be back the next day! And it had that same revolting smell you mentioned, bleeeech!

I never managed to get rid of the smell. I would recommend two dryer sheets for blocking your nostrils.

Could it be a thyroid issue? I worked at a vet clinic for two years. A greasy-feeling coat and a bad odor can be indicative of hypothyroid problems. It’s a simple blood test to check, and the pills are pretty cheap (or at least they used to be). I could tell when my in-laws’ Sheltie needed to have her levels checked just by petting her.

His coat’s normal. Just stinky. It’s been two days with the new food and I haven’t noticed any destinkifying yet. At least it doesn’t appear to be catching - my dog is still stink-free.

Bump Did you ever find out what the stink was from? I gave mine a bath, she stunk again the next day, but having bathed the rest of her, it became clear the stink was emanating from her ears. A couple of days of ear washes with white vinegar and alcohol (warm it slightly, pour it into the ear canal and massage in for a few minutes) did the trick.

Nope. I started feeding him my dog’s food and the stink abated somewhat but never really went away. His owners are back now and I haven’t seen him in a while altho he’s coming back this weekend for another visit. I’ll let you know if he’s still smelly dog!

A stink like that in Golden Retriever that swims is almost always an ear infection (yeasty crud down in the ear canal). Look at the skin under the ear – if its reddish, and if the ear canal looks brownish, then its an ear infection. The vet can sedate the dog and clean out the ear canal, and then prescribe drops.

When we had a Golden Retriever who swam every day, we once had a case of him mildewing. The mildew was down in his base coat, underneath his fluffy and abundant topcoat (Golden Retriever fur is luxuriant, I can tell you). He’d swim and either take too long to dry out, or else never dry out completely, slept on his little dog bed and quietly developed his own personal layer of mold way down deep. We bathed him and it didn’t help, so we took him to a vet, who recommended a groomer, who knocked the stank off him and advised us to make sure he dried out completely in between swims.

It’s definitely not his ears - I stuck my nose right in those babies first thing as I used to have an Irish Setter who had the ear stinkies. The mold is an interesting theory because I know they let him swim a lot and his coat is really thick. And it did seem to emanate from all over him and not one particular place. Hmmmmmm.
