I was just trying to plan how to use my time off, also.
We get PTO- paid time off. They don’t care if it is sick time or holiday time or whatever- it’s just paid time off or not paid time off.
But, whenever I request PTO, the scheduler ‘adjusts’ my schedule so I get the time off without having to use my PTO. She thinks she is doing me a favor, but I want to use my PTO because after several hundred hours are collected, it no longer accumulates. I have been hanging at the top of the scale where I can’t accumulate any more for too long. I want to use it (and not lose it)!
You can trade your hours for cash, but it only nets about half its value that way. The only way to get full value is to use the hours as PTO.
(You can also donate some of it to other coworkers in need, which is nice.)
Getting unexpected holidays really sucks.
I am not supposed to go back to work until Jan 5th!
I can entertain myself, but I would much rather be at work, doing something useful.
Also I could not take around 5 of my holidays, and they are gone forever.
My last day of work was December 18th and I’m not due back 'til January 5th. Working part-time I can take off as much time as I want, but I’ll only get paid for 3 weeks. In two years, I’ll have 10 years of service in and will get 4 weeks paid. I might go full-time then because I can take a week off every third month. That seems like an insane amount of time to take off but I’ll give it that old college try.
I govt service, one can have the Alternate Work Schedule, with every other Friday off and working for only 8 hours on the Fridays you’re at work. After 15 years, you get 8 hours a pay period in vacation time. Ergo, if you work AWS with 15 years experience, you could potentially NEVER work Fridays until you retire.
