I KNOW this has been pitted before, but it just drives me so crazy. The latest one I’ve read came in [this](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=315894) thread. In a thread about “recommend some film noir”, it took until 24 posts until someone piped in with “Nobody’s mentioned. . .” and in this case it was [Detour](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037638/)!!! Wow, how did nobody mention THAT? Geez, directed by the immortal Edgar G. Ulmer and starring the always riveting Tom Neal. In a thread where the discussion had focussed on _Double Indemnity_, _The Third Man_ and _Touch of Evil_ how did we ever leave out _Detour_? Go ahead an mention it. . .don’t act like it’s a crime to overlook a sort of niche Noir movie, no matter how good you may think it is. Boy, I read a thread like that and I just wait. for. it. I read each successive post and starting at around post #6, the dread feeling starts rising. You know that each successive post brings it closer and closer. Its the feeling you get playing Jenga, knowing that each block moves that tower closer to toppling. Or they way you felt as a kind playing “Don’t Spill The Beans” or like sitting in a Bingo hall after 20 numbers have been called and you just know that each number bring you closer to someone yelling, “BINGO!” Forget a specific example, though. . .It’s just a stupid introduction: “I can’t believe no one has mentioned. . .” Fuck you. YOU mention it. I’m mentioning stuff I want to mention. Others are mentioning stuff they want to mention. We’re all mentioning stuff. You fuckin’ mention it. What’s the rule on how many posts should go by before we’ve crossed into “Can’t believe no one has mentioned. . .” territory. Yeah, I’ll give you that in a “Greatest Rock Bands Ever” thread, if we make it 20 posts without mentioning “The Rolling Stones” you can say it. But if we’re 3 posts in and the first 2 were “Led Zeppelin” and “The Beatles”, don’t fuckin’ say “I can’t believe no one has said ‘The Rolling Stones’”. If we’re 18 posts in, though, believe me. . .it’s not suprising that no one has mentioned _Echo & The Bunnymen_. “Greatest Hitters of All Time”. . .maybe 6 posts without someone saying Babe Ruth. 20 posts in. . .go ahead and _mention_ Dale Murphy but don’t act so astounded that “no one has mentioned Dale Murphy.” Just mention stuff. Why the impulse? Do you think that it automatically moves your pet example into the realm of the first ones that were mentioned? Guess what. . .it doesn’t. ---

THANK YOU! I have started Pit threads about this before and the annoying practice STILL continues! I believe this to be the single most annoying thing about SDMB. Now some asshat is going to put in a “I can’t believe no one has mentioned…” comment, attempting to be funny. Just you watch. ---

It tells the rest of us that you believed that your subject was more widely regarded than the thread’s responses indicate. It might annoy a few people but, if you let them tell you how to express yourself, you shouldn’t be on the SDMB in the first place. ---

Or actually make a case that your movie has been unfairly overlooked. “Yes, _The Third Man_ was a great film. . .but if you want to check out a film noir that came from a small studio with less well-known principals, but is otherwise suspenseful and interesting, check out _Detour_.” ---

Maybe the best course I’ve ever been on. We ate at Oliverios in the Wharf District. It was only all right. I ordered a special with tuna and the tuna was TOTALLY overcooked. Someone in cooking 101 knows that you don’t served tuna anything above rare. This was well-done. Almost sent it back. ---

A 9.4 on the Apath-o-meter. And it was kind of a long OP. The Oliverio’s in Clarksburg is a bit better than the one in Morgantown, I think. But there are so many Italian restaurants in the area that there’s always one you’d like better. ---

I’ve queued up Echo and the Bunnymen in my iTunes and I am going to play three albums consecutively just to spite everyone in this thread. By the 3rd or 4th song I’ll be willing to admit that they do not belong on any greatest bands of all time list, but I have a wide musical taste, so I really don’t mind them as a change of pace.
