Stopping would-be mass shooters who have clean backgrounds

Speaking of strawmen…

Not all those examples are of “armed teachers” and the point you continue to avoid that my link demonstrates is that more guns in schools means more gun accidents and incidents in schools, which become a greater danger than the danger the guns are purporting to mitigate.

As for “How to stop mass shooters with clean backgrounds” - you can’t, without either greatly restricting access to guns or greatly increasing surveillance of gun owners. Each country sets the slider on its “freedom/safety” continuum in different places on this particular issue. America is an outlier among Western countries to the extent it has pushed it way toward “freedom”, with the result of having greatly reduced safety. You can’t have unlimited amounts of both but there are happy mediums to be had, Ben Franklin’s much-butchered quote on the subject notwithstanding.

Yes, that’s why I said “as you may know”

I don’t really care that much about “incidents”, I care about injuries and fatalities. Your article listed zero fatalities in regards to resource officers, and only one minor wound. I’m also skeptical that rifles are going to be forgotten that much in the shitter, or accidentally discharged. It’s not as easy to accidentally discharge a rifle.

The article’s conclusion is “Arming teachers would increase risk, not safety.” A proposition I do not disagree with. It also says there is “no evidence that the presence of resource officers in schools lessened the severity of school shooting incidents.” There will also be little evidence that armed resource officers deterred anyone from shooting up a school (i.e. stopping would-be mass shooters who have clean backgrounds), but I would be willing to bet that number is greater than zero.

Now, one could argue that it is not worth trying this in order to preventing 50 some kids from dying in school shootings each year. I could buy into that argument. But obviously less deaths are attributable to resource officers than deaths by mass shooters.

In #125 above I noted a suggestion to station at least two full-time cops (sworn LEOs) at every public and private nursery, primary, secondary, and post-secondary campus in the US, and lots more for big and scattered campuses. That will be rather expensive… in an era of massive budget cuts… except for the US military.

[Light bulb!] Not cops - station TROOPS at all schools. Call-em EMPs, Educational Military Protectors. For surety, put machine-gun nests at each access point. Strip-search all entering a campus. Better yet, seal off the campus for the school term, locking everybody inside. Security. Order. Zero tolerance for violations.

How to stop would-be mass shooters who have clean backgrounds? Take the Ockham’s Razor approach: Eliminate firearms. But that won’t happen, so accept that you and your family are targets. Happily water the tree of liberty with your and their blood.

Pretty much. Any fortified target will see shooters moving to unfortified targets. We all know the 2A isn’t going to be repealed and the 393 million firearms in the US are not going to be confiscated. Not in our lifetimes and probably not ever. And if that happened, there will be a tremendous cost to that too, both in resources and lives lost.

So yeah, unless we can identify and address why crazies are shooting places up (other than “because they have a gun”), you can expect 500 some people dying every year in mass shootings in perpetuity.
