As for the length of the passwords (not the master password) they do not all have to be the same length or style.
One site might have a maximum length of 20 characters and only certain special symbols, others may have other standards. The usefulness of the password manager is that every password can be different and as complex as you want or need it to be. You only need to know the master password.
Yes i understand. But since im going to want new passwords for my banking and email accounts… let say all of them allow up to 32 letters/characters… so i just make every site 32 letters/characters? The reason is b/c if not, then i have to manually change the 20 to some other number. 20 seems to be the default on keepass.
I once used a (real estate tracking?) site which routinely sent out emails with the recipient’s user id AND password (unencrypted).
I sent them an email “Security - Get It!” and suggested they remove that info. Actully got a reply from a real person:
“The data we keep is of no interest to the bad guys, so no harm”.
Children.
I explained that some people use the same id/password combos for multiple accounts, and maybe a person who strip-mined your site for ID/pswd combos, then started running them against, say, Chase just might present a problem.
One time in my life a stranger actually took my advice without having to pay for it.
Like to update this. I used keepass 2.0 and have it save on my laptop. Also copied the file to my usb as well. I like to transport the same file to my iphone 4s.
How am i suppose to do this? I believe i have to download minikeepass on my iphone? I did that. However i couldnt just copy and paste the keepass 2.0 from desktop to my iphone. I read it involves using a program like dropbox but i downloaded this to my desktop and put the program there. Then i downloaded dropbox on iphone and i see the file. However, i can’t view the file on the iphone and when i click open, it doesnt allow me to open into keepass. Can someone tell me what im doing wrong here?
How do you copy the file from desktop version of keepass to the phone? I just copied and then clicked paste on my iphone in my computer and that doesn’t work at all… shows error.
I read online that i could download dropbox to do this though? I downloaded dropbox then put the keepass2.0 on it. Then i downloaded dropbox on iphone4s, then signed on… then i see the 2kb of the keepass there. However, how do i get it to minikeepass? It shows file is not viewable. I clicked on open file in … then it give me option of only google drive. So im confused why this is happening.
Unless they have hacked one of those websites, then they know what they have to answer at other places.
Which is why those security questions are a bad thing. They encourage people to learn security habits that are unsafe (i.e. tacitly reinforcing the idea that it’s OK to use the same security credentials in multiple places)
If you are using an iPhone, I suggest using 1Password. It has an app for the iPhone/iPad and one for your computer as well as plugins for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc. 1Password takes care of syncing your password file across all your devices.
I have an Android phone, not an iPhone, but the steps should be pretty much the same…only the names will have changed to protect the innocent:
Install the KeePass application on your phone. For me, that’s called ‘KeePass Droid’; I’m not sure what the iPhone equivalent is.
Get the KeePass database file onto your phone. I have it stored in Dropbox so that I have it accessible on all of my devices; if you do that then you will also need to install Dropbox on your iPhone so that you can sync it.
Open the KeePass application, point it to your database file (in Dropbox, or wherever you put it), and enter your passhprase.
If you don’t want to use Dropbox (or some other cloud storage/file syncing software) you can just copy the KeePass database file onto your phone via USB, but it will not be in sync with your laptop once you make a change to it.
Can’t get it to work. When i click on keepass file after i opened dropbox, it only allow me to open to google drive and not drop box… does that make sense? Am i suppose to log into google first b/c thats what it shows…
It’s because the iPhone doesn’t provide a regular file management environment. Data from one app is segregated from other apps. This is why I mentioned 1Password above. If keepass doesn’t do all of the password synchronization itself then it won’t do what you want on the iPhone. 1Password is plenty secure and works seamlessly across all your devices.
I read ppl mention on the reviews they have no problems transferring the same keepass file from their laptop to dropbox and then opened in the minikeepass on their iphone. I still don’t know why this doesn’t work for me and all i read is open the keepass file when in dropbox… but when i click open in… all it shows is google drive…
