It was about the size of a garbanzo bean, under my right boob right where my bra strap goes, so quite uncomfortable. A couple of failed lancings just made it hurt so I did my best to ignore it. Then took a hot soapy bath and performed the ultimate lancing in the tub. Once deflated and emptied of ooky stuff and blood it hurt a lot less.
I own a couple of yahoogroups, one very high volume so I have four moderators and a co-owner, the other an OT off-shoot of the main one. They’ve been going strong for about ten years, and many of us know each other IRL.
The comment section for the local news (mlive.com) is pretty much a cesspool of racism and ignorance. It’s depressing.
I’m over there too sometimes (under a different name). You’re right: It’s a huge board, with a combination of wonderfully useful information about local issues with awful ignorance and stupidity about any slightly controversial issue.
How come boils/itchy moles always head for the bra strap areas? Very unfair. I ended up having to go unsupported for a week one time, when the wound where a mole used to be healed. No ooky stuff though
It kills me to read the horrible crap that passes for writing in other forums. I don’t consider myself as someone who writes well but I, at least, put in some effort to make sure the words are spelled correctly and punctuation is used appropriately.
Just yesterday I read a thread where someone mentioned, “our Four Fathers.” I don’t think anyone replying after him noticed. That kind of shit would never pass here.
It’s not just the Dope. Of the four other forums (and TVtropes) I lurk at, only one has posters who routinely don’t use good English, and that’s generally poor punctuation, capitalization, and spacing. And that’s only a few people.
But I like how the Dope is set up and the culture here, more or less.
I’ve been on a parenting message board since I was pregnant with Whatsit Jr. (so about ten years now) and the only reason I stay is basically inertia and the fact that I have made a few online friends there. But the overall quality of discussion is just so unbelievably poor. Lots of easily-debunked glurge and fearful posts about perverts lurking around every corner and so forth. There’s a politics forum there and it’s sparsely populated mostly with climate-change/evolution deniers and the like. Gah.
The feeling I get is that the mods here seem willing to give apparent trolls plenty of rope to hang themselves with-i.e. the benefit of the doubt. Yeah in some cases it ends up being miles and miles of the stuff, but otherwise the banhammer might end up seeming to be overly harsh and arbitrary if the trigger is pulled quickly (even if in practice a guy who looks like a troll right from Day One of his posting history very rarely cleans up his game to become a regular regular here).
This is the only board I’ve ever belonged to, or contributed to, or even read at length. While I do take the occasional potshot at those who comment on news articles at the Alaska Daily News, it’s rather like shooting legless ducks. The retorts and comments there amount to the equivalent of “oh yeah, well Obamanater sucks, man.” “Yah, you tell him, toughAlaskan45caliber.”
