I know Twitter has been around for quite some time so not really a fad, and I think there will be some form of instant communication, but Iā€™m not sure it will be Twitter. Iā€™m not convinced Facebook will be here in 10 years either so you can take this ludditeā€™s opinion with a grain of salt šŸ™‚ ---

The former demands too much personal information and the latter is far too constrained for intelligent communication. ---

When Twitter first came out, I basically said to my daughters ā€œI donā€™t get it ā€¦ why would I want to use a service that seems just like a place to text message the public?ā€ These days, all the text messaging programs on my phones let me be a lot more verbose than Twitter. Oh, the irony! ---

Twitter is a fast way to get information out, and Facebook is about interacting with friends. Neither one are for intellectual conversation. Sure, you can have such conversations on Facebook, but itā€™s just because youā€™re doing so with friends that you would have had those conversations in real life. The reason to object to Facebook is that it is moving our social lives online. Even I will admit that, while it has its upsides, that is problematic. The main objection I have with Twitter is that people feel the need to post things when they have nothing to say. But I think the good outweighs the bad. You get your quick updates on things you care about, and the brevity requires joking. You get a nice idea of what people in the world are interested in, all because people feel compelled to share. And I can learn all this from Twitter, with my actual participation being optional.
