I would say my thoughts about sex have been about constant since I hit puberty. I probably don’t think about it every hour, because sometimes I am intensely concentrated on a game or something. But if I’m not really concentrating on something, then I’ll probably think about it once an hour or so. It’s wildly variable, though. For example, if I’m with an attractive woman, it’s virtually impossible to avoid thinking about. ---

There was a sitcom promo where a woman, speaking to the man looking her in the face, says something like “I heard that men think about sex every 4 seconds”. He replies “Huh? Did you say something”. Brilliant. (I tried to find the clip, with no success. Anyone?) ---

Frequently. I blame society. Okay, not society but as a straight man, I’m being hit with sexual cues all day long. Watch TV and we see attractive women all over the place. Same thing if we watch a movie. Look at the advertisements that are all over the place and a large share of those feature good looking women. Read a magazine or a comic book - good looking women. Heck, the top story in today’s New York Post was Jennifer Lopez’s nipple. And this isn’t even mentioning all the actual women you encounter. Now I realize there’s a chicken and egg issue here. Does all this stuff cause us men to think about sex all the time? Or does all this stuff exist because we already were thinking about sex all the time? ---

I sometimes think I can empathize with men. I’m a woman, but how would I feel if I was surrounded all day by playful kittens and puppies? I was really trying to concentrate on the projections for next quarter, but here is that puppy from accounting again ! Juuust look at that chubby round tummy and that cute little tail. Don’t you just wanna _pet_ that? Just nibble those cute perky little ears till she mews and purrs. Rub that soft fluffy … ahem. Okay, so, the projections for next quarter. ---

Similarly, the only time it has really dropped off my mind for long periods has been when depressed and on SNRIs. That _really_ affected things. Beyond that there’s no hard and fast rule. A few months back I could go a few hours without thinking about it. Right now I am in the situation where I have just started seeing someone (three weeks in after a six months or so flirting session where neither of us realised the other was interested) and I am pretty much having difficulty concentrating full stop. 37, straight. ---

The invasion of sexual thoughts into my mind, completely out of nowhere, was a pretty disturbing thing for me when I reached puberty. I didn’t appreciate it at all. I didn’t mind having sexual thoughts. But, hey, not in the middle of an exam. After much monitoring, I finally put it together that if I had a sexual release, my brain would be completely free of invasive thoughts for about 24 hours. This is not to say that I am not capable of such thoughts. But, they are far more voluntary. I can focus properly on the day’s projects. It’s far more than sex - It’s an investment in sanity. Digressing a little… A person’s mind is far more a product of a person’s biology than is believed by the average person. In fact, it is the mistaken belief that the mind and body are entirely separate that allows for such beliefs as ghosts and life after death. Straight Male, 41 yrs old ---

I dunno. I disagree (respectfully) that if I notice a woman as being attractive, that that counts as a “sexual” thought. Every time we see people, especially for the first time, we subconciously evaluate them based on various factors (grooming, choice of clothes, body language and moods) automatically. If the OP is asserting that this counts, then a heterosexual male is havnig sexual thoughts about everyone, including other dudes, all the time! Looking at a photo of a human that is just a “head shot”, if I think she has too much lipstick, am I having a sexual thought? (After all, lipstick is just to make the mouth look like a vagina, right?) 🙂 ---

Let’s face it - it really doesn’t take all that much to attract a man. They go through all of the trouble - all of the ritual - to maintain their social position with the other women. In other words, it’s about maintaining territory. It’s madness.
