This kind of felt like an episode of Doctor Who. Going back in time, to Earth from a starting point very far away, to a critical point in time.
It was a fun episode, but it really stretched my ability to suspend disbelief:
- Three M class worlds in our Solar system, two of which have species capable of space travel
- One canister of antimatter is able to destroy an entire planet? Isn’t that basically what is in a photon torpedo?
- The fragment of the planet was able to get from the fifth planet to earth in minutes. And only one piece seems to have made it.
- I am trying to figure out if they included dinosaur and pterosaurs from outside of the cretaceous period. They seems to have done a pretty good job there.

I think they got that part right.
Where they might have screwed up was on those multi-trunk trees they showed. I believe those died out long before the cretaceous. But maybe I made a mistake?

One kilogram of antimatter (reacting with one kilogram of matter) has a blast roughly similar in strength to Russia’s tested Tsara Bolmba.

I don’t know which is more impressive, the Federation’s ability to compress that mass down to the size of a toaster oven, or the strength of two Martians to lift it.

And it was really cool seeing **La’An Noonien-Singh** punch a raptor in the face and scare it off. Though she should have had her phaser out and ready on such a dangerous trek.

A few extra thoughts on one of the plot points:
The planet fragment that killed off the dinosaurs reminded me of Star Trek: Generations where everything moves as the speed of plot. In this episode, they observe the destruction of the fifth planet and have time to see that the earth is struck by the fragment - all before the shockwave (with the power of a supernova no less) gets to them. If you have played with Kerbal, you know that it takes a lot of energy to raise or lower your orbit. To get to earth in anything less than years would require the rock fragment to be moving at near light speed.
In Generations, the time between the chemical powered rocket that is carrying the star destroying warhead launching and the star going out is seconds. The change in gravity from that star would also not be observable until after the mass and shockwave passed the planet they were standing on.
I know that you can’t apply the rules of physics to Sci-Fi, but it fun trying 🙂
