They had one a few years ago on Murdoch Mysteries like that too. As not a sci-fi/fantasy the victim didn’t survive though.

Sidetrack/hijack but Murdoch Mysteries is very much science fiction or fantasy, especially when you consider that a Toronto police detective at the turn of the Twentieth Century invents in the course of his investigations almost everything of note in the following hundred years.

That type of injury has been used a number of times. There was an episode of some emergency or medical show in the 1980s where it happened in a car accident, most of the episode had Victim Of The Week waiting to die when the object is moved. It stuck with me enough to remember it all these years but not enough to remember what show it was.
But in Star Trek it is pretty silly for it to be such a critical injury. You can’t tell me that at their level of technology they wouldn’t have some sort of advanced [heart bypass machine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiopulmonary_bypass) to keep oxygenated blood flowing to a patient’s brain while their body was worked on.
More than that, the transporter system (or at the very least a specialized medical transformer) should have stored configurations of what a healthy body of various species should look like, and have the ability to beam someone three feet to the left except with the squished stuff fixed. It shouldn’t be much more of a challenge than beaming someone in a standing position on one end into a climbing a ladder position on the other end.

For whatever techno-babble reason, the transporters generally don’t work that way. And considering the number of transporter accidents we’ve seen over the years on their best ships, it probably would have a higher chance of something catastrophic happening.
I think under normal conditions, saving the Doc may have been more straight forward with normal Star Fleet Tech.
As long as we’re nitpicking, on TOS and TAS, weren’t within ship transports difficult? Here we’re several years earlier and a not fully trained cadet was asked to do so.

If they were going to use the transporter to solve the problem, just have it turn the doctor into a puppet. Problem solved.
Speaking of the Vulcan cadet, it’s only her second appearance and they are already softening (ruining) her tactlessness. I preferred her as an asshole.

There are a number of things the Transporters do on SNW that seem to be ‘forgotten’ between now and TOS - (changing clothes and outfitting equiptment from S1EP1, holding injured folks in the ‘buffer’ - hell, even having a ‘Medical Transporter’ )
THat being said - in this episode, along with the power situation - I have no issue with not using the transporter in this situation - they simply ‘couldn’t’.

They always talk about a “pattern”. Therefore, I figure the transporters are supposed to keep you together, somehow, even while your particles are flying through subspace or whatever it is, so that you emerge alive at the other end. It would therefore not replace bits of you.
Unless someone hacks it, or its programming is exposed to mild electromagnetic interference. Then anything can happen. Just take the stairs.

Yep. As I said earlier, it’s one of those technologies that’s so powerful, the writers always have to find a reason why it can’t be used to solve _this particular problem_.
It’s like the episode of Next Generation when Picard and a few others were turned into kids by a transporter malfunction. Oops, we accidentally invented virtual immortality. Please ignore our mess!

At the beginning of this week’s episode (Season 4, Episode 6, “Off-Hour”), whichever character is doing the opening narration announces that the week for alpha shift is ending and the weekend is about to start. Is a five-day workweek and then a two-day weekend how Star Trek has always worked? I would expect seven-day work weeks or something like that.

So the “Weekend” is, what? 12 hours off watch? 16 hours?

The shifts thing confuses me because you would think like most things in Starfleet, they would just have an analog to the traditional watch system used in nautical ships. From what I gather Starfleet has three shifts (Alpha, Beta, and Gamma) that work eight hour watches. I guess a “weekend” requires all shifts to work 12 hour watches at certain intervals.

3 shifts is most common in Starfleet but some ships run 4.
US Navy doesn’t run that way and no weekends to speak of at sea. It varies a lot by Department.
At Sea we engineers a 12 hour day and up to 2 watches of 4 hours. A watch would often be during the work day.
Now paper pushers had a different and easier schedule.
Airdales had a lot of downtime but during flight ops were pretty much on duty.

Just watched the muppet episode. Hoo boy. I was there for the singing episode. I enjoyed the cartoon crossover with Lower Decks. But this one just felt wrong. Emphasis on ‘felt’, haha!
My wife is not into this show, so I watch it on my own. You know how you sometimes try to convince someone that a show is good, so you get them to watch an episode with you, and it turns out to be a bad or dumb one, a real clunker? That’s not quite what happened here, but while I was watching this one, my wife, doing her own thing, happened to walk into the room right at the point where the crew was turned into muppets and said “what the _hell_ are you watching?” I sheepishly said “yeah, this is not shaping up to be my favorite episode of SNW”.
