my high school- Detroit Catholic Central Mascot- shamrock nothing unusual about that, you say? (wait for it) our colors were Blue and White. We were the blue shamrocks. ---

Stuyvesant alumni, I’m ashamed of you! How could you let this thread pass you by without mention of the few, the proud the… Stuyvesant H.S. … PEGLEGS!!! its true! The mascot is a wee Peter Stuyvesant, one wooden leg proudly displayed. ---

Here in Baltimore we have the Dunbar **Poets**. Now there’s a name to strike fear into your oponent’s heart! The University of Maryland is the **Terrapins**. These turtles are plentiful in the state, but they are ( or were ) primarilay used for making soup. Check the Final Four this weekend. You’ll see signs that say “Fear the Turtle”. Not bloody likely! ---

I too, was a Quaker in HS “Fight, Quakers!”? College at Indiana Uni of Pennslyvania We where the “Indians”, our mascot was an Indian. This, of course, is not PC. Fine. Change the mascot. To what? A bear. Ok. (lame, but whatever) So what’s the team name? THE INDIANS? WTF! How is this better? ---

I went to high school in Jefferson City, MO, and one of our main rivals was Hickman H.S. in Columbia. Their nickname . . The KEWPIES. That’s right, they’re named for a stupid little doll worth about $1.50 that you have to actually trade UP for at the amusement park. Of course, our mascot was the Jays, so I can’t really talk. The mascot at the games did look pretty tough tho’ A few college teams that we played: Whittier College Poets (R.M. Nixon’s alma mater) Pomona College Sagehens UC Santa Barbara Banana Slugs (at least basketball) We were the Stags, which pretty much sums up my dating experience in college. ---

High school was a while back, so my recollection of this is fuzzy, but I remember an Idaho team with one of the all time great mascots - the Spud. He was a kid in a big brown blob of a suit. They lost a lot, so the Spud was generally wandering around in a funk, kicking rocks. I wish I had filmed it. ---
