I go to Ichabod Crane High School, named after the character from “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving (which was based on people and places in our town). The team is the Riders. The girls’ teams are the Lady Riders. The logo is a headless horseman. Perhaps ebcause of the difficulties in costuming that, we don’t have an actual mascot. ---

I used to teach 4th grade in Compton, CA (home of NWA - “Straight Outta Compton”). One of the kids had a pencil that said “Compton High Tarbabies.” I stared at it, and finally took it over to the next-door teacher after school. He didn’t grow up there, but he was black and had been there a while (both of which helped him understand the neighborhood better than me). I said, “Is this really the mascot of the high school?” “Yes.” “Is there something I don’t understand here?” “No, I don’t get it either.” I’d love to hear the history of _that_ name. I’d put a link here to prove that I’m not making this up, but as anyone from the L.A. area can tell you, Compton is at the absolute bottom of the school district barrel, and I CANNOT find a direct reference to this on the web, and barely any to the school at all, even on six engines. ---

Bishop Guertin HS in Nashua, NH. Private Catholic day school. Mascot: the Cardinal. Not the color, not the Church official, but the bird. The RED bird. Our school colors? Green and yellow. Oh yeah, that makes plenty of sense. Merrimack, NH (the town I grew up in) had the Tomahawks. Nashua, NH had the Purple Panthers. ---

well, I just moved from Florida to Louisiana. My old school was the Patriots. Soem gun control activists started on our school about the patriot on our sign holding a musket. But we won. A local town nearby, called Lakeland had the Lakeland High dreadnaughts. yes, an english boat was their mascot., But somethign must have been right becuase they ahve lost a game in like 5 years. But the weirdest to me have to be these: the school I now attend is in a Paper mill town and our mascot is the Bogalusa Lumberjacks. OOOHHH. A nearby team is called the salmen. What are they gonna do? Hit us with their tails? I dunno…there are some weird ones out there. A local school here is called the Bowling Greene Buccaneers, but what i ahte is that they took the Tampa Bay Bucs flag and painted it green and gold and use it as their sign thingy. It looks horrible ---

Some strange Texas mascots that come to mind: Amarillo Sandies - They chant “Blow sandies Blow” no lie. Big Spring Steers - castrated bulls are scary Hamlin Pied-Pipers - I guess that makes sense Bonham Purple Warriors - I don’t know what that’s about New Braunfels Unicorns - ? ---

I think the worst team name in Nevada is probably the Fallon Green Waves. I’m not sure if it’s one word or two, but either way, what the hell is a green wave? Nevada isn’t on an ocean, and Fallon is right in the middle of the desert! I’ve never seen the mascot in person at any sporting events, but their logo is a little green wave holding up his (human) fists. ---

As long as this thread is I had not yet read it, but when I did I decided to reply to SoSoMom, who posted way back in the first life of the thread, on 12-21-2000. She mentioned a college team named the Ichabods, and wasn’t sure what it was or where it was from. On 12-22-2000 Burrito Boy replied it was from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. It’s my alma mater(1981) and here is a link with a picture [http://www.washburn.edu/services/mabee/ichabod.html](http://www.washburn.edu/services/mabee/ichabod.html) What the infomation here does not tell is that the original name of the school was Lincoln College, and when Ichabod Washburn donated a big(for then) chunk of money the school changed its name. As odd as it is we have one thing to be proud of. Fred"GodHatesFags"Phelps has personally denounced the Ichabod, calling it an evil idol. There is an Old Testament refernece saying the name means "God’s glory has departed, and that’s what Phred Felps bases his idiocy on. So if Fred hates it it must be okay. ---

How did I miss this thread back in '01? A few more HS mascots from Wisconsin: Monroe also has the Cheesemakers, as referenced in the OP Clintonville is the Truckers. Horicon is home to the Marshmen, the girls’ teams are the Marshladies. ---

My boys graduated from Midland, MI High school - the Chemics (Dow Chemical was founded and has its headquarters here). The logo is an atom with a block M in the nucleus. The mascot? A lion named Vic (short for Victory). The other school in town is Dow High, nickname Chargers. Mascot: the Doughboy (as in Pillsbury; Dow ~ dough).
