I read the whole zombified thread without seeing my favorite and most politically incorrect high school mascot ever. Still extant in Orifino ID. 10 internet bux to first one to identify mascot AND reason for controversy. ---

I think the hands-down strangest school mascot is that of the schools in Moodus, CT. They’re the [Noises](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moodus,_Connecticut#Noises). ---

[Indiana High School Mascots](http://www.maxpreps.com/news/gBGJk-o48UGk8eOcCb3XWA/maxpreps-mascot-mondays--indiana-high-school-mascots.htm) lists some of the more unusual ones in the state - including my favorites: Frankfort Hot Dogs (the mascot is a dachshund, alas), and Speedway Sparkplugs (yes, the town is named after the Indianapolis Speedway). ---

Not high school, but a small town near me has a little league team called the Yankees, and a youth football league called the Jets. What’s so odd about that, you ask? Amesbury, Mass. is right outside of Boston. ---

Good to see Illinois here in the mix (and zombie remix) Orphans, Pretzels (my HS rival) and Appleknockers… Carbondale IL HS are the terriers…yes the fluffy little dog! I went to Millikin University in Decatur…The Big Blue. blue what? I asked, that’s it, just the Big Blue! ---

But there is also the Delphi Oracles, which I think has to be one of the greatest nicknames of all times. One of my other favorites is the Logansport Berries, (Loganberries) who play basketball in the Berry Bowl and have Felix the Cat as their mascot. ---

My high school had The Grenadiers, which they always talked about during pep rallies as the bravest, most skilled soldiers who were given the honor of carrying short-fused bombs. They left off “craziest, most disposable.” I used to live in Salem, MA, whose mascot was, of course, the Witches. Even the boy’s teams. I currently teach at an all-girls high-school whose mascot is the Fighting Daisies. We’re looking for an alternative. ---
