> Also, the Cheesemakers are from the costal town of Tillamook, known in the region at least for the large cheese manufacturing complex producing the Tillamook brands.

Good cheese! (Well, I like it.)

Ridgefield HS in Ridgefield, WA sports the name, “Spudders”. Because they grew potatoes in the area.

> There’s a town in Arkansas that I have passed through on numerous occasions. It’s called Cave City and they grow the best watermelon in the world there. Anyway, their mascot is the Cavemen. Oh, well, what else are you going to call a team from Cave City?
>
> Now this isn’t a high school but there is a college in Kansas (I think, it’s Kansas) and they are the Icabods or something like that. (Oh someone who knows please tell this story right.) Anyway, I saw them play at a tournament and they had this guy wearing an Icabod head. Icabod is a man’s name you see so basically he was dressed up as a man with a giant head. Well, I thought it odd.

I live in Topeka, Kansas, home to Washburn University. This is the school mentioned in this old post. I even graduated there, in 1981.

See, in 1865 the school was founded as Lincoln College. Just a few years later it was in financial difficulty, and a well to do man from back east in Massachusetts, who never even saw the place, donated $25000 and kept the place afloat. His name was Ichabod Washburn. The school was renamed for him and when school mascots became a big thing, well…

Here’s the website for the university, and you can see more about the history.

> Washburn University is a premier college in Kansas. With just under 7000 students, Washburn offers college degree programs for undergraduate, graduate and law students.

That reminds of the Richland HS Bombers:

“Richland is one of the Tri-Cities, Washington, home to the Hanford nuclear site.” (Wikipedia)

> And you know what’s _really_ irritating? We could have had the Phoenix as our mascot. But no. We had to be a color. Dammit. I suppose it doesn’t really matter, since no one goes to games anyway 😃 .

I know it is named after the color, but you have to like that the only widely acknowledged use of maroon as a noun is for escaped slaves and people stranded on islands.

I didn’t read the whole thread, so maybe someone mentioned this before. In south Georgia, there’s a town called Cairo (pronounced Karo, like the corn syrup). The Cairo High School team is the Syrupmakers, since Roddenberry’s syrup was once made in Cairo. The mascot is a syrup pitcher.

There are loads of high school teams called the Trojans in Georgia, but the mascot is always a soldier.

Did you go to the Mount?

My high school, Mount Saint Mary’s, mascot was/is the Rockets.

And it is a small school.

> Are you counting the Hollister (CA) High Haybalers?

I attended junior high in Salinas, California. My school was somewhat peculiar in that it included grades 7-12. In the gym, all the athletic teams against which the high schoolers routinely competed were represented with the appropriately captioned mascot banners.

Cut to Austin, Texas, 20 years later, and allow me to insert the note that I am fairly oblivious when it comes to faddish teen wear (and many other things as well, but for let us limit it to fashion for the purposes of this conversation). A member of my theater company’s stage crew showed up to a rehearsal with the word “Hollister” boldly emblazoned across the front of his t-shirt. “So,” I said, in complete innocence, “you a Haybalers fan?”

> The KEWPIES. That’s right, they’re named for a stupid little doll worth about $1.50 that you have to actually trade UP for at the amusement park. Of course, our mascot was the Jays, so I can’t really talk. The mascot at the games did look pretty tough tho’

Came to mention this one. Went to school in Columbia and always found this one funny as I would drive by.
