Stuyvesant alumni, I’m ashamed of you! How could you let this thread pass you by without mention of the few, the proud the…
Stuyvesant H.S. …
PEGLEGS!!!
its true! The mascot is a wee Peter Stuyvesant, one wooden leg proudly displayed.
And you know what’s really irritating? We could have had the Phoenix as our mascot. But no. We had to be a color. Dammit. I suppose it doesn’t really matter, since no one goes to games anyway
.
Here in Baltimore we have the Dunbar Poets. Now there’s a name to strike fear into your oponent’s heart! The University of Maryland is the Terrapins. These turtles are plentiful in the state, but they are ( or were ) primarilay used for making soup. Check the Final Four this weekend. You’ll see signs that say “Fear the Turtle”. Not bloody likely!
My job once shipped some things to Dry Prong Junior High. We always wondered what their mascot was…
Dijon,
It’s a wildcat, why? ( I called them and asked. hehe )
I too, was a Quaker in HS “Fight, Quakers!”?
College at Indiana Uni of Pennslyvania
We where the “Indians”, our mascot was an Indian. This, of course, is not PC. Fine. Change the mascot. To what? A bear. Ok. (lame, but whatever) So what’s the team name? THE INDIANS? WTF! How is this better?
I went to high school in Jefferson City, MO, and one of our main rivals was Hickman H.S. in Columbia. Their nickname . .
The KEWPIES. That’s right, they’re named for a stupid little doll worth about $1.50 that you have to actually trade UP for at the amusement park. Of course, our mascot was the Jays, so I can’t really talk. The mascot at the games did look pretty tough tho’
A few college teams that we played:
Whittier College Poets (R.M. Nixon’s alma mater)
Pomona College Sagehens
UC Santa Barbara Banana Slugs (at least basketball)
We were the Stags, which pretty much sums up my dating experience in college.
High school was a while back, so my recollection of this is fuzzy, but I remember an Idaho team with one of the all time great mascots - the Spud.
He was a kid in a big brown blob of a suit. They lost a lot, so the Spud was generally wandering around in a funk, kicking rocks. I wish I had filmed it.
Are you counting the Hollister (CA) High Haybalers?
My alma mater was the Breakers, as in ocean waves. Our mascot (Billie the Breaker) wore a big papier mache blue & white wave on her head.
“bluejacket” is a synonym for “sailor”. Less strange, now, right?
It just sounded like a painful medical condition that you’d see Bob Dole selling medication for. The halftime show images that I was getting defied common sense…that giant, er…um, prong running around the field…
Still, Dry prong is not so bad. Dry Hole, on the other hand…YEEEOUCH!
Maybe the Dry Prong Lubricants?
Or maybe the Greasers? The mind boggles…
Dude, do NOT rag on my high school mascot. I graduated from Bubbletown in 1994. I shit you not. Our fans would sit in the stands with bubble blowers (you know, the soapy stuff), and when we would score the whole damn crowd would blow bubbles. Kinda charming, actually.
PS-Where in the hell do you live? Carlisle? Churchtown (now there’s a town for you- redneck heaven)?
Dynamite! And, following the battle of the colas in donating money to high school sports programs in order to get exclusive rights to dispense their stuff, I have visions of Astroglide and KY Jelly fighting each other to gain market share by sponsoring Dry Prong sports. Think of the vending machines in the cafeteria…
Not quite, UC-SB are the Gauchos. UC-Santa Cruz are the Banana Slugs.
I went to school for a couple of years in Rockwall, TX, and their mascot was the Yellow Jacket.
We were The Railroaders and our mascot was a train.
I’m not raggin’ on the Bubblers. Just reporting the facts.
At the time I posted, I was living in the big town- Carlisle. Now I’m hanging my hat on the East Shore.
