Was this before or after Jethro Tull won the “Best Metal Album” Grammy?

Waitresses and Oingo Boingo halfway makes sense, because they were both considered New Wave bands.

1980, well before that nonsense. Foresightful!

Yeah, I see the thinking on that bill, but Oingo Boingo had taken a harder edge - it was a mosh pit down front - and they heckled poor Patty Donahue mercilessly.

> When I saw Lorde (around 2018), one of her two opening acts was hip-hop act Run the Jewels. After their first song (which had a lot of profanity), one of them said, with a smile, “Apologies to all the moms who brought their daughters to see Lorde tonight, but we curse a lot.”

Heh. I saw Remi Wolfe opening for Olivia Rodrigo. Rodrigo does swear a little (see the unexpurgated version of “Vampire”) but Wolfe swore a **lot**. Personally I found her getting an arena full of under-18 girls to all scream “MOTHERFUCKER!” to be hilarious. Not sure if the other parents in attendance thought so.

Since someone mentioned John Cooper Clarke already, I’ll note I saw the late Allan Ginsberg and the not-late Philip Glass do a concert together. It was fascinating. Ginsberg played the harmonium and sang. Glass played the piano. Sometimes they did this together, but mostly they alternated.

I saw X open for Oingo Boingo. It doesn’t seem as jarring now as it did in 1982. They had completely different groups of fans back then.

> Around 1971 or so I saw the Grateful Dead. The opener was a monkey act, i.e., a guy with a trained monkey. He had the monkey smoking cigarettes, among other “tricks.”

Also around then (1972) I saw a trained chimp opening act. The main act was Captain Beefheart. This was in Boston, and the audience did not like the apes very much.

I hope the Librarian doesn’t hear you call apes monkeys.

The show I mentioned was also in Boston, at B.U.'s Sargent Gym. We were refused admission as our tickets turned out to be counterfeit.

We joined a group of folks who were boosting each other up thru a second-story window. Being a gym, we were able to jump down on a pile of wrestling mats for a soft landing, and then find empty seats for the show.

Wow, that might even beat the Jimi Hendrix Experience opening for the Monkees in 1967 (not that I saw this, I was -1 year old).
