> Long ago, I woke to my alarm, but had real trouble getting it to turn off. Finally I got it to stop and went back to sleep. I woke up later, and the phone rang and I answered it. It was my mom, saying “Did you pick up the phone and hang up when I called an hour ago?”

I did that once, too. I was working the midnight shift, and about 9 or so in the morning, after getting off work at 7, I was home in the first deep sleep phase and the phone rang. I remember thinking “I don’t want to talk to anyone. I’m tired.” So I picked the handset up and set it soen again. The caller called right back, and by that time, I was more awake, and I did answer. I wasn’t happy, but I answered.

There was the strange thing I did the other day - woke up in the middle of the night complaining rather loudly about that “sodding car alarm that won’t bloody turn off” and how it was affecting my sleep. Was told, rather firmly, that there was no car alarm going off and that I must have dreamt it. I was insistent that there was, and that there was no way I could get back to sleep. Apparantly, I turned over and promptly fell asleep. My assertion in the morning was that the car alarm had switched off, just as I’d complained about it, and that’s how I could get back to sleep, whilst all the time being told that no, I’d merely dreamt it, and that there was no car alarm.

Hmmm… Sounds like something out of Men in Black, if it wasn’t so mundane.

The other night I was sleeping with my head about 1/8" away from the cinder-block wall, needless to say I awoke suddenly and about crushed my skull.

[slight hijack]
I played a prank on my roommate in college that involved cleverly hiding a micro-cassette player with his alarm recorded on it, right by his actuall alarm clock. I almost wet myself watching from behind a door. He initially splapped the snooze button and tried to go back to sleep. Then he slapped it a little harder, then alot harder. He looked like a confused monkey hitting a rock with a stick, and it seemed to last forever. At this point he was almost awake and unplugged it. He was absolutely dumbfounded, he had the plug in his hand and the alarm was still blaring. The riotous laughter that ensued let him in on the joke.

He uses that as his “one up” to anyone who has a good prank story. He particularly liked the fact that we recorded 5 minutes of silence before the alarm in order to allow us to sneak back out. Guess you had to be there.

> Then there was the time I was awakened out of a sound sleep by a horrible explosion. I thought it was a nuclear war. Trouble was, I was living in a dorm and once I recovered from my terror I could hear people out in the hall chatting, obviously unconcerned about the horrible noise. And the next day when I asked people about it they looked at me like I was crazy and said they hadn’t heard anything.

I get this, it sounds like a gunshot, or really loud slamming sound. I have no clue what it is but it does bother me. Mr aruvqan thinks it is something to do with worrying about my exfiancee stalking me.

Strangest sleeping/dreaming experience I ever had was back when I lived in western NY state with an exboyfriend. We had moved into a nice 2 bedroom apartment together and he had a job at the burger King 2 parkinglots away from the building.

Went to bed like normal the first night, and not too surprisingly had a dream about moving in, and being peeved that there were red and black designs all over the wallsbecause the landlord was supposed to have painted the place before we moved in. Was alone in bed as BF worked closing shift, and i had to be up first thing in the morning for a day job. Still in the dream… I woke up and heard the tv in the livingroom and didnt open my eyes because I was being watched. I _knew_ that it would be useless calling out to BF as the being standing in my doorway watching me was keeping him away from me. In my dream i sneeked an eye open to peek, and there was a tall hooded person standing in the door looking at me, glowing red eyes and half black and half white face, like on that star trek episode. There was red and black runes and drawings on the wall. I woke up screaming anyway, with BF there as he had the night off for moving in. I drew the rune that I could remember to show him and he put it in his desk. He though it was odd because I never had bad dreams normally before. I would have the exact dream 3 or 4 nights a week for the entire 5 months we lived there. When we were packing to move out, another friend of ours found a necklace with a medallion with that rune on it under the edge of the carpet behind the desk at that wall…everybody thought that was supremely creepy as most of them had found out about my nightmares and seen the rune drawing.

> Back in high school, there was about a month where every night I would dream that I went to classes, did homework, got chewed out by my parents, etc. So basically I was getting a double dose of the daily grind. Just about lost it for awhile.

I think I’d be questioning my own sanity after something like that. I had something similar, though less extreme, happen to me once. I once dreamt an entire week of my usual routine, including school, homework, my job, drama practice, and other mundane aspects of high school life. I woke up expecting it to be Friday, and was rather irritated that it was only Tuesday, and felt as if I’d done all that work for nothing.

For years, I didn’t remember my dreams, and wasn’t sure that I actually dreamed at all. It may be due to the changes in my sleep patterns from working a constantly changing schedule, but I’ve started recalling dreams more regularly, or at least remembering that I was dreaming, even if I can’t recall the specific content. The most bizarre one that I can recall bits and pieces of involved going to a rather Mad Max-ish drive-in movie theater that was surrounded by walls made of scrap metal and barbed wire, and sitting down on the grass to watch a really, really dumb stoner/gross out comedy of the sort that I wouldn’t pay money to see in a theater. It made me want to demand a refund from my brain. The one thing that really stands out in my mind was two stoners driving around in a van, baked out of their minds, while one of them tried to figure out how to use a frozen cornish game hen as a bowl. I don’t drink, and I don’t use drugs, and frankly, I’m a little disturbed by whatever synaptical misfiring was responsible for me watching a movie of some guy trying to smoke a chicken in my dreams.
