This type of activist is not very different from zealots belonging to other causes (PETA, for example).
After awhile, it doesn’t matter very much if your tactics are remotely successful, who you offend and how much damage you might be doing to your cause. You keep plugging away because it’s all you know and there’d be an empty space in your life if you went on to more productive activities.
In the case of abortion protesters, holding posters portraying gory images does a lot less damage than committing vandalism against clinics, stalking physicians and murdering the opposition.
