A friend of mine in high school back in the 80’s was a pro-wrestling fan. He knew all about the traditions of Lucha Libre, mainly from trading tapes with other fans from Mexico, Texas, and California, but also from Mexican-style (in other words, not necessarily from Mexico) masked wrestlers who appeared in pro wrestling’s “minor leagues.” I vaguely remember the odd documentary appearing on American TV about Mexican wrestlers. So, it wasn’t entirely out of the realm of the American consciousness.
