As I recall, the story was supposed to be that after Maher made his remark and was getting a lot of bad publicity about it, Matt and other comedy writers were asked what they thought. Matt made some comment defending Maher’s freedom of speech. Rickie and Ron were then asked what they thought and that Matt was only speaking for himself and not for anyone else on the show and they said they didn’t agree with what Maher said.
Honestly, Revedge, by the strandards of the TV I do watch, Studio 60 sucks. It’s overloaded with out of place political posturing. The characters are dumb and poorly presented (if often well-acted). The plots lifted from the most tired of sitcoms. The setting, unbelievable.
At first, I was watching it because Sorkin might still manage to pull it around. Then I watched it for the train wreck appeal. Now I’m just watching it so I can say I saw the whole thing and because there’s nothing better on at that timeslot.
Is it the worst show on television? No. Is it in the bottom 50%? Probably. And you can’t help but judge the thing both by Sorkin’s previous works, and by the other show about making SNL on NBC, 30 Rock. And it suffers horrible in both!
I am just watching the show now out of habit, and the fact that it is still on my DVR list. I am over being disappointed. The show simply isn’t very good - and I think part of the problem is Sorkin trying to write behind the scenes of a comedy (SNL). While Sorkin is a talented and sometimes witty writer, he is not exactly a wild and crazy guy…he was writing out of his element and it showed.
This episode was just OK…sort of like most of the episodes so far. I agree the show is better than most of the crap on television, but Sorkin fans don’t grade him on a curve. They want to see “A+” work and this show is a definite “C-” for Sorkin.
