Stuff near LA Union Station

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Sometimes you have the energy and gumption to do a little exploring, and sometimes you don’t and you simply need to recharge. Many of us do, if not all of us.

I second this recommendation. The last time I was there the docents were really great.

You only had an hour, that is what I would do too.

Same here.

In fact, given Amtrak’s on time record, I’m amazed you got there in time for your next train!

Cole’s, LA’s oldest restaurant at 117 years old, is closing next month.

Well…fuck. And The Varnish closed, too.

Stranger

I got an email from Norman Langer lamenting the loss of Cole’s. It’s sad.

It also made me wonder if the stupid ICE stunt at McArthur Park affected Langer’s.

Me too. I’d have wandered around the station, maybe grabbed a bite to eat - nothing more than that.

My friend and I will have most of a day, assuming we get out of our hotel in time.

Amtrak is supposedly now enforcing no lounge access until 3 hours before departure, which is annoying - we’d hoped to leave our carry-on luggage in the lounge while we went sightseeing.

That’s how it was for us at the other end, going from Seattle to L.A. And we had only arrived late the previous night on the Cascades from Vancouver. Itvwas the shortest hotel stay ever.

Yep.

I think we got to the hotel pretty close to midnight. We were feeling vile - grubby and sweaty from a day of travel - and were desperate for showers.

And the shower was DANGEROUS. It was a new build, and the tub was frighteningly slippery. Thank heaven there were grab bars or I’d have come out of it with some extra broken bones.

I think we got maybe 6 hours of sleep before it was time to head right back out.

Amusingly, the hotel had a print that was very much an unauthorized knockoff of Pixar’s lamp characters - I think Pixar is (or was) headquartered in Emeryville.
