Stuff to do somewhere between Albany & Poughkeepsie

Wow. This brings back some memories. My mom wasn’t usually interested in going to the movies and my brother was usually out carousing so my father and I were movie buddies every weekend. We went at least once, usually twice, a weekend for the best old/classic movies and new independents, and the shorts and animation festivals. My father isn’t the most accessible guy but I know it meant something that we went together. Most notable was the weekend we spent there (Mom came along) for Fassbinder’s TV miniseries Berlin Alexanderplatz, which lasted seven hours on Saturday and eight hours on Sunday. [One time on some sit-com they used that title to signify having sat through an inscrutable normal-length movie. I’m thinking, I don’t think so, it’s a lot longer than two hours!]

Thanks for the reminder of some good times. And I am glad to see they are still in business.

Woodstock also had an old theater where Pop could get his Necco wafers for 25 cents.

It’s also funny to hear about how great Kingston is. I grew up downtown before all the boutiquification of the Rondout (I still haven’t been back to see it) and down by us was considered the lower-class part of town. The historic buildings and good restaurants uptown were the draw.

'Tis true…but Kingston has always held a charm for me that has nothing to do with the city. It’s a long story but I have fond memories of the place.

I lived there from birth to 18 and sometimes I am tempted to go back and see all the places where my brother and I and my pals had our adventures! But I know my childhood home has been remodelled and I don’t want to see that (holding on to my memories of it). My best childhood friend is buried there but I’ve never been one to go visit graves.

Would she have any interest in scenic strolls, of the type that old folks can easily manage, perhaps followed by tea on the veranda? If so, consider the Mohonk Mountain House near New Paltz. Very scenic and delightfully funky in a 19th century sort of way.
