This is a really wierd one that’s probably only going to make sense to me…

Way back, when Prince Charles still had a wife, I was idly flicking through the newspaper one day, and there was a fluff article about her at her sons’ school sports day. In the picture, she looked rather grumpy. The article speculated that she was feeling cross ‘because she didn’t win the Mothers’ Race’

I should mention that my personal relationship to sports of all kinds is such that success in a race, for me, generally means ‘was not so far behind the second-last runner as to be laughed at mercilessly’.

So I don’t particularly ‘get’ people who expect to win races, although I know logically that such people must exist.

I really don’t get people who expect this to the extent that they would be upset about not winning (excepting people who make their living that way). Not ‘getting upset over losing badly’ (that I understand!) but about not being the _very best_ out of all the people on the field.

I REALLY don’t get people who have that mindset to such a great degree that they could automatically ascribe “upset over not winning” to some random person whose sports skills they have absolutely no reason to believe anything about.

And I really REALLY don’t get why I am still thinking about this FIFTEEN YEARS later.

I need to get a life

Another thing I don’t get:

Choosing a celebrity for your ad and then selecting pictures where she is barely recognizable (latest J’Adore ad, anybody?) What’s the point of spending that kind of big bucks if people need to go up to nose-touching distance of the poster and read who that sort’a’familiar blonde is, and then they still barely recognize her even though they know who she is?

I think you’ll find they get a loan, generally speaking. 🙂
Even so, it’s still a hefty chunk of change, and I don’t know many people who’d get a loan for $20,000 just to buy a car that wasn’t 5 or 6 years old.

> [@](#):
>
> You’re actually wrong about the servicing with regards to warranty thing - definitely in SA, possibly in the rest of Australia. It’s been illegal for a good nine, maybe ten years or so for a manufacturer to void the warranty because you’re not getting your car serviced through your Local Mazda (or insert your brand of car here) Dealership. The only rule is that you have to get it serviced by a proper mechanic and not ‘my mate Davo who’s good with cars’. So, $80 for a service.
>
> I’m fairly sure this is an Australia-wide ruling and not SA specifically, but I can’t state that with absolute assurance.

I’m pretty sure that up here in Queensland they can refuse to honour the warranty if you’ve used non-genuine parts.

So, if you take your car to K-Mart Tyre & Auto and get them to change the oil, filter, and coolant, and they don’t use the (Insert Manufacturer Here) Genuine (or Approved) Parts, they can declare the warranty (or part of it relating to the non-genuine parts, at least) void.

I deal with a lot of warranties at work, and the fine print quite clearly states that if you modify the product in any way outside the manufacturer’s specifications, the warranty is void and you’re on your own. I’m not sure how the law applies to motor vehicles up here, however, so you may be right.

Even so, a friend of mine who bought a new Holden Astra tells me he has to take it to an Approved Holden Service Centre for servicing if he wants to keep his warranty, so it might be legal for a manufacturer to require that in QLD. Certainly wouldn’t surprise me…

> [@](#):
>
> And, by the way, if you have comprehensive insurance there’s still no worries about anyone backing into you at the supermarket.

I meant more in the sense of “Aw, crap, some bastard dinged my shiny new car!” than the “Aw, crap, now I have to pay to get this fixed!”.

I don’t get:

- Hobbyists who take their hobby beyond a normal hobby, and into the realm of crazy obsession. You know, the home brewers who rather than contenting themselves with a usual 5 gallon all-grain setup, create some kind of 1 BBL RIMS system with refrigerated cylindroconical fermenters.

Like [Robert Goddard](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Goddard)? If it weren’t for this crazy hobbist we prolly wouldn’t have a space program. ( Such that it is. )

This one, I _do_ get. Hobbies are about enjoying something. If you have the time, money, and/or space, why not? I used to have a house with a sunroom. I didn’t need a sunroom, so I turned it into a brew room. I had as much fun building the counters, 10-gallon three-tier brewing setup, and so forth as I did brewing in it. I had to sell most of the stuff when we moved, but it was _fun_!

As I said a few dozen posts ago about customizing cars, it’s enjoyable to customize your space and make it your own. Non-book people would think my study full of bookshelves is nuts–I’ll never reread all of those books–but I love being in the room. I love looking at the volumes and remembering where I got them. I have five shelves of autographed copies and a whole shelf for stuff I’ve written. The whole room makes me feel good.

Love is love. One kind isn’t better or more important than another. Does that mean that a dog’s life is more important than a human child’s? Of course not. But you should never disparage someone else’s emotions just because your feelings are different.
I don’t mean to disparage anyone’s emotions, and I don’t think that I am. I’m just mildly offended at someone who thinks that the love they feel for their dog is the same as the love I feel for my child. They ask me how my kids are and I tell them about an accident my daughter suffered, how I was in the hospital with her for 12 hours one night, how heartbreaking it is to see her crawling around with a cast on her little leg, etc. Then they say- Oh, I know just how you feel. Last weekend Woofsie had to wear one of those cones on her neck because she had a mole removed and the vet didn’t want her to chew at her stitches.

No, you don’t have any earthly idea how I feel, and to suggest that they’re on the same level is insulting.

I don’t get how anyone could enjoy dating. You’re trying to make a good impression on someone, and that is, by definition, a very stressful situation for me (and something I’m not very good at).

I don’t get why some people think a handwritten letter is somehow better or less impersonal than a typed one. I can’t read most handwriting (even good handwriting is really hard for me to read), so I’d much rather have something typed. And I can’t imagine anyone who has actually seen my handwriting wanting something handwritten from me instead of typed. I also hate hate hate writing anything by hand, so if you’re willing to accept a typed thank-you note, you’re much more likely to actually get one from me. [Fortunately, handwriting is becoming less important these days](http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/10/AR2006101001475.html)😃

OK, something that’s not been posted. Lots of decorative pillows on a bed. Where do they go at night? Hubby and I each use two pillows, and those are what stay on the bed. We don’t have big square euro pillows and little rectangular ones with tassles and round neckrolls with fancy trim. Just the ones we use.

(The movie “Along Came Polly” addressed this perfectly IMO.)
