Stupid ATM design - I just forgot to take my rent money from the ATM

All I can say is: damn, that sucks. Let us know how things go.

I wish I could

The $350 is for rent, so if I have lost it, I have to put out another $350 - so it’s total of $700, which I don’t have.

Friends are all telling me the cash always come out last. Most likely I mis-remembered it, or just go through some automatic programs and there was a short circuit in my brain that day.

I tend to zone out from times to times. It’s a typical characteristic of me. I remember rushing down to a clinical appointment only to realise I came on the wrong date.

I am going down to the bank and check if anyone has returned the cash. crosses fingers

Hmm. I’ve never seen an ATM that sucks your card in and keeps it there. All the ones I’ve used I just stick one end of the card in and pull it right out again before even entering the PIN.

Huh? What does being out of the US have to do with it… is the US somehow more honest? In most places in the Arabian Peninsula I think you’d get it back.

I have a friend who left 5,000 AED (About $1360) in a Dubai taxi and got it back a few hours later when the taxi passed back through our part of town… and no, they don’t chop off people’s hands there.

Yeah, I wouldn’t trust many people here to find $350 sitting in an ATM and not just pocket it.

I saw a story on the news today where a drug dealer was getting chased by the police through L.A. and started throwing money out the window (in denominations mostly of $20s and $100s). It had the desired effect - cars slammed on their brakes in the middle of the freeway and people got out to collect it off the asphalt.

I’m sure the same thing would happen anywhere but I found it sort of amusing as an event representative of our culture.

Well even after re-reading I see it as I originally did. My interpretation is that the poster is saying that under other circumstances (i.e. in the US) chance of return would be greater than 1/10. If the poster isn’t saying that, then fine.

Where are you from?

I’m sorry. What a bummer situation. Good luck with the bank. Most ATMs will suck the money back in if you don’t take it in a few seconds, and it should be recoverable by the bank. So there is still hope.

I learned this the hard way. I took a vacation to Mali. Well, Mali only has about five ATMs in the entire country, all in the capital. And since I didn’t have any exchangeable currency on me, the ATM was the only way I was going to get money for my trip.

I pulled out about $400. It had to be enough to last a month, since there were no ATMs outside of the capital. So I swiped the card, typed the PIN and waited. As I waited, I started adjusting my moneybelt. Well, the cash came out. But I didn’t get to it in time. It just got sucked right back in.

I had to go back the next day to talk to the bank. I was terrified, since African banks are infamous for their bureaucracy and corruption. And my French was still quite shaky. Amazingly, they were really helpful and I got the money with no problems!

Anyway, good luck!

Just in case you eve the visit the UK, It’s ALWAYS card-cash-receipt, unless it’s one of those ATM’s that’s not a ‘hole-in-the-wall’ type, those are cash then card, mostly.

I’m obviously not Eyebrows 0f Doom, but Citibank ATMs are designed this way.

Here in central US, most of the ATMs I see have this kind of design as well except for some of the more old-fashioned ones. I’m accustomed enough to it that I did the whole “forget the card in the machine” thing the last time I had to use one that actually takes the card in.

For those who have following the saga, the bank just SMSed me that the amount I have forgot to take have been credited back to my account.

So for those who have been concerned about me, rejoice! Slaughter a goat to please whatever dark gods your worship or sing for joy at church, dance around a potted plant, or do a random deed of kindness to a total stranger, depending on your affiliations.

I am going to make arrangement where I can use Internet Banking to transfer the rent money to my landlord instead of cash so this won’t happen again.

I think Singapore is quite okay when it comes to decent behavior. Believe it or not, this is not the second time I have done this (though the previous time it involves less amount of cash, like $20). I left the machine after taking the card and the people at the queue will holler at me that I have forgotten the money. (There was once that someone chased after me). There are also times when I either forgot to take the change from the cashier and they yell (friendly) at me or I pocket the changes but forgot to take what I have bought.

I admit it. I am the poster child of an airhead filled with helium.

I was going to post ‘Good Luck!’ but it seems the matter has been resolved. I’m glad you were able to get the money credited. I think I’d sit and cry if I left my rent money in an ATM somewhere.
