Anytime I’ve gotten fantastic seats they have always been freebies from the record company/band/radio station. Concerts where I’ve sat refreshing a webpage until the moment I could purchase seats, they have been mediocre at best.
Love Steely Dan.

Love Steely Dan.
Me too.
Wait. You can BUY tickets to concerts?
I thought all those people who could see the horn section had just won their tickets from a classier outfit than I did…
I obviously can’t speak to that specific concert. I can tell you that I have 10th row center seats to Bob Dylan tonight and that I got to order my tickets three days before the mob because I got an email from bobdylan.com letting me know about the pre-sale.
I am on the email list of all of my favorite artists, a few different ticket selling sites (like Ticketmaster) and of a bunch of different concert venues. I get two to three emails a week letting me know about pre-sale information. I am not saying that ticket scalping scum doesn’t exist but I can tell you that if you’re trying to buy tickets on the day of the regular sale, you’re doing it wrong.
I have literally gone to hundreds of concerts over the last twenty-five years but then what the fuck do I know? I’m giving you golden advice here. Take it or leave it.
Perhaps if you asked for the face value they would sell. People sometimes think a bargain is a red flag for a rip off when it comes to internet sales.
¡Gracias, Señora!
Paul McCartney is doing two shows at Wrigley Field in a few weeks. The first show sold out in minutes and then after the second show was added, it sold out fairly quickly as well.
I got my tickets several days before the general public, and before the AMEX presale, through McCartney’s website. I couldn’t afford the best seats, but they were available. I was able to get seats in a lower-priced section, but they’re great seats and I didn’t have to fight the masses for them.
So do tell. How was the show, how were your seats?
I saw Dylan years (decades?) ago and the old man rocked the house.
He’s as tempermental as any artist, how did things go?
Dizzy’s Bidness.
Thank you very much. Do you know if they’ve recorded that? I searched Youtube for the title, but all I came up with was Cannonball Adderly doing Dizzy’s Business (a 1962 arrangement that was more reminiscent of MJQ - type stuff).
I’m not sure what the cause of this is, but its everywhere I’ve ever been & seen music played. Even HS gyms always had parents in the front row with coats on seats saying they were ‘taken’.
Its not the performers.
Its the ‘who you know’ scum at the venue or the ticket agencies. Personally, I’ve never been to anyones show where they weren’t so far away that it looked like they were in 1/125th scale. The only show where I made it to floor seats, it was at the absolute back of the floor and a squad of cheerleaders in front of us where taking turns getting on top of each others shoulders & blocking our view. Some performers do give random upgrades but the only performer I’ve ever seen do anything about it beyond this this was Katy Perry, who literally strapped herself to a movable elevator platform and played while being lifted to the back of the amphitheater by some sort of crane (probably at great personal risk to herself).
But the ticket-scum knew & adapted: our seats were in the back upper-deck corners, where her crane couldn’t go. Still, it was nice that she at least tried.
Ever worked at Altamont?
Lots of fun. I’ve seen him around fifteen times since the late 80’s and it can be hit or miss. He was really good this time. Hard to believe that he’s 70 years old. He played guitar, keyboard and harmonica on various songs which included a lot of old favorites. I really like his latest band with Charlie Sexton on lead guitar.
The seats were in the 10th row but more off to the side than in the center. It was on the good side though with a view straight to The Man.
You should go see him again…but join his email list first!
I wouldn’t think shopping online would be that tiring!
Last year I saw so many shows at Red Rocks, got fed up with high school girls on drugs crying in the bathroom. Stopped seeing electronic music there, that fixed that problem!
Sometimes venues will release tickets on the day of the show. I don’t know the logistics of it, but I think some brokers/block holders are able to return unsold tickets. I just got 13th row for Eddie Izzard tonight at face value (and no service charges at the Box Office!)
If I can’t get decent seats from the initial sales, I can usually get a good ticket on eBay or Craigslist. A final option is just to go down to the venue right before the show; there always seem to be tickets available on the street. The prices drop dramatically once showtime rolls around.
Ok, please don’t laugh, but I bought tickets for the Wiggles (I said don’t laugh! I have a little boy) the day of the presale, three days before they were for sale to the general public. I didn’t want tickets for the main floor because my son is still a bit young and I felt he might be uncomfortable there. I hoped to get the first row in the lower risers and since I had the presale/ fan club head start, I thought it’d be no problem getting what I wanted. Precisely at 10am, sale time I clicked and bought and ended up 10 rows back in the lower risers. This is a pretty big venue and I find it hard to believe that all of main floor as well as the first 10 rows were bought up during the presale in a matter of seconds.
Come on. Don’t make fun of people with a speech impediment.
