Thanks again for all the responses, but my underlying question has been answered, i.e. “should I even try?”

nope.

If I decide that I really do want a backup in that bedroom, I can buy crap from local pawn shops. Not the answer I hoped for, but I want to thank everybody anyway. Cheers.
