I’m not surprised. The cops are more dangerous than us armed citizens because we go to range to shoot and practice.

Sometimes compromise really _doesn’t_ work.

And are there any compromises you don’t consider"half-assed"? Or is _any_ attempt to mitigate the gun death problem in America a step onto a slippery slope that will ultimately end with all guns confiscated, all gun owners rounded into re-education camps, and all their children made into soup to be fed to illegal aliens? I mean, I keep getting told that us gun-grabbers secretly all want total capitulation on the issue and any that don’t admit that are lying.

So what can you suggest that isn’t “half-assed”?

I’ve always wondered why is this slippery-slope always towards Liberal/Left and never in the other direction. Is it that Liberal/Left-side is just like gravity, basic law of the nature. You know, the one that G-d gave us…

The suspect was in an RV, so it wasn’t like the police could actually aim at him (assuming he wasn’t standing at a window).

On the other hand, you’d think one shot would have hit him (along with whole question of why they were shooting at someone they couldn’t see).

That analogy is cute, and it’s great if you’re talking about something that is impossible. It also works really well if the result of trying something is guaranteed to be death.

If your starting point is that trying to reduce gun morbidity and mortality is as impossible as swimming 2,500 miles, and that if we make an attempt that fails we will die, then there’s really no need for you to participate in the solution.

I don’t know if this fits the thread, but I didn’t think it needed it’s own, necessarily: [There Are 20 Percent Fewer Gun Injuries During NRA Conventions](https://tonic.vice.com/en_us/article/8xdbd3/nra-conventions-fewer-gun-injuries-study)

> [@](#):
>
> “We used data from a large private insurance database, where we looked at about 75 million people who’d had a visit to either a doctor, emergency department, or a hospital on the dates of NRA conventions,” Anupam Jena, senior author of the study and a professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School, tells Tonic. Researchers used the data—which covered injuries between 2007 and 2015—to compare the rate of gun injuries on convention days to the rate on non-convention days in the three weeks before and after.
>
> “What we found is that on the date of the conventions, the proportion of visits that involved a gun injury was about 20 percent lower than the identical days of the week in the surrounding weeks,” Jena says. On non-convention days, gun injuries happened at a rate of 1.5 per 100,000 people. When the NRA convention was in session, that rate dropped to 1.25 per 100,000 people. (When provided with a copy of the study, a spokesperson for the NRA declined to comment on the record.)

Oh, and [here’s the actual study](http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc1712773).

My cousin and I (both past-middle-age ladies, occasional shooters) were at the range one day, popping away with our .22 pistols at 20-yard targets, when in comes a town policeman to practice before his upcoming proficiency testing.

Dunno what he was shooting, except it was higher caliber than our popguns, he couldn’t shoot as accurately at half the distance as we were, and after a little while his gun jammed and he couldn’t get it unjammed, even after getting on the phone to the police gun honcho. I let him have the screwdriver in my shooting bag when we wrapped up our session, and we left him still struggling to unjam his weapon.

So reassuring…

By what the banners who came out of the woodwork since the Florida shooting have been saying, yeah it pretty much looks that way.

That I couldn’t speak to.

> I mean, I keep getting told that us gun-grabbers secretly all want total capitulation on the issue and any that don’t admit that are lying.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who imagine a compromise involving some combination of registration, low capacity/low firing rate guns, universal background checks, licensing, etc. - gun control light in other words. The problem is that once it’s conceded that people have no inherent right to own proscribed weapons, once banning (at least some) guns is acknowledged to be within the general power of the state, then yes there is a slippery slope down to effectively none at all. And plenty of people who vocally advocate for just such a thing, and who are on record as seeking every precedent, every incremental step in the “right” direction that can be accomplished. The very gun control debate we’re currently having is evidence of a slippery slope, when no one pre-1968 would have seriously imagined.

It already is the case that people have no inherent right to own proscribed weapons, and the state is currently empowered to ban some guns. If you don’t know these basic details, you’re in no position to discuss gun laws.

Cite? It’s still legal to own a fully-automatic machine gun, if you can get around the _de facto_ ban that was (imho, fraudulently) enacted by taxing machine guns and then simply refusing to allow them to be registered. You can own a howitzer if you’re willing to pay a $200 tax on each and every shell you fire out of it. Our current system is a cobbled-together workaround of the embarrassing Second Amendment.

There was literally a church service this week to bless AR15s. That’s the direction in which American “gun culture” is moving.

“Once we implement libel laws, we have conceded that people have no inherent right to fully free speech and there’s nothing to stop us from banning all speech we don’t agree with!”. You are literally presenting the slippery slope fallacy in action.

> [@](#):
>
> The very gun control debate we’re currently having is evidence of a slippery slope, when no one pre-1968 would have seriously imagined.

That’s because we’re already _on_ a slippery slope in the other direction, as has been repeatedly pointed out, and much of that has been driven by the NRA and its purchased legislators. You don’t even have to go back to 1968: just consider how the “gun culture” and the rhetoric around it - including the rhetoric from the NRA - has changed in the past 20 years.

Your protestations smack more of objecting to any attempts to stop the rapid slide in your preferred direction than of a reaction to an actual danger. And the neat thing about your approach is that you get to pretend that you’re just defending yourself against a potential threat from the other side while simultaneously justifying your own extreme views…which is a familiar argument for this topic.

What are you talking about ? That is not gun control light, that IS gun control.
It might be gun grabbing light, if you insist, but you really should know that there is a difference between gun control and gun grabbing ? If you don’t then: :smack:
