Creating a hypothetical and then pretending the hypothetical is secretly true is delusional at best and malicious at worst. It certainly makes me wonder how little actual negative material you have to work with against the Democrats if you have to spend so much time on this board manufacturing malfeasance and spinning insinuations into crises. The Democrats certainly have their issues, weaknesses and scandals, but instead of addressing those in a rational and even-handed fashion you seem unable to stop yourself from spouting the latest soundbites from Breitbart or contorting reality to fit your pre-selected narrative. Which is rather sad, because you’re clearly not a stupid person. When Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton or someone else publishes Trump’s hacked records, go wild. Back on topic: some mildly stupid liberal ideas coming from[Ebony magazine](http://www.ebony.com/entertainment-culture/simone-manuel-racism#axzz4HUDTF7kv)this week in the wake of Simone Manuel’s historic Olympic victory. It also ignores the fact that many descendants of slaves live in the Caribbean and, having ready access to the ocean, have been swimming just fine. The rather more coherent argument, also posed in the article, is that 1) parents who swim are far more likely to teach their children to swim than parents who don’t, and 2) up until two generations ago, most black people in America were denied access to swimming facilities and thus couldn’t learn to swim. Which is why an increasing number of black children now are swimming. Which is good. If I had a dollar for every time I’d seen or heard a “ride on or attach something to Usain Bolt to make it go fast” joke, I could probably afford to pay Usain Bolt to give me a piggyback ride. Even Bolt makes them. ---

I don’t believe that **DerekMichaels00** is saying that Ellen is racist for tweeting the picture. The “stupid liberal idea” is the backlash that she is facing from others accusing her of racism. ---

A handful of random social media posters, who seem to exist in no obvious public role or capacity as “liberals” does not make their postings liberal ideas. I mean if that’s what we’re going to do then lets have the SDMB clone **Clothy** ’s and **Derek** ’s posts directly into the SRIOTD thread. ---

On that note, did we cover [W. Kamau Bell’s suggestion](http://edition.cnn.com/2016/08/04/opinions/michael-phelps-flag-bearer-w-kamau-bell/)that Michael Phelps step aside as duly-elected flagbearer in order to let Ibtihaj Muhammad carry it? I mean, sure, it would have been a nice gesture if he’d offered (and Muhammad was a close second in the vote) but Phelps was chosen and certainly worthy, and there’s no reason to compel him to hand it over by any means. Mind you, the stupidity of the suggestion was far outweighed by the stupidity of the right-wing reaction to the suggestion, acting as if a rampaging mob of liberals had bound and gagged Phelps and handed our precious flag to one of those America-hating Mooslim types, so I suppose it was a wash overall. ---

One of the things I like about the Olympics is that it gives a chance for lesser-known sports, and therefore lesser-known athletes, to have a chance at the spotlight. You can’t exactly say that Phelps has been lacking in the fame and fortune department prior to these games. However, despite this being his fifth Olympics, he’d never been in the parade during the Opening Ceremonies before; his events always began the following day so he skipped it to rest up for the competition. He’s earned the honor, and this was his only chance to do it. ---
