For some time I’ve read the thread title (internally) as _Stupid Idea That Conservatives Think Liberals Have. Of the Day_. Helps me get through it without having apoplexy or a laughing fit. ---

Sen. Don Nelson (D) Florida. Being interviewed on CNN during Ft. Lauderdale Airport shooting, manages to mention the Orlando nightclub shooting and that he’s just introduced a bill that would have caught the shooter and stopped him from buying the “high caliber rapid fire rifle” (Nelson’s words)that he used. 1. Fuck you Nelson for using a tragedy to puff up your own political visibility. 2. Since when is .223 a “high caliber” round? ---

We’ve known for a long time to best time to get sensible gun control passed is to jump on it after a tragedy. And that’s exactly the time Republicans say, “let’s let things cool down first,” which is their way of doing nothing. Australia got their gun control passed after a mass shooting and they’re doing just fine. Haven’t been taken over by a dictator yet. ---

Presumably that’s why he said it “would have prevented” the Orlando shooting, not that it _will_ prevent it. And it’s most likely [the same thing](https://www.billnelson.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/senators-unveil-bipartisan-gun-control-compromise) Nelson has been offering up _since_ the Orlando shooting, which would have required the FBI to be notified when the Orlando shooter bought a gun.
