I’m a fan of Matt Taibbi. 🆒 I agree this is a stupid idea, and you can call it a stupid Democratic idea if you wish, but I think it’s wrong to blame the “liberals.” Such travesties occur because the Democratic Party _is NOT liberal_. Those who think America has a “left-wing” party and a “right-wing” party are poorly informed. We have a right-wing party and a lunatic party. ---

Oh, I don’t think the Drug War is particularly “liberal” by USA standards, but aren’t we engaging in some kind of fallacy by decrying the Democrats as not true liberals when they pull stuff like this? These are the liberals we have. ---

“No True Scotsman” - and yes, definitions change over time. Sometimes language can be consciously changed by propagandist’s framing of issues. Whether or not waterboarding is torture, for instance. It is a bit jarring to classify something that would not fit under any definition of liberal I’ve heard of as a “stupid liberal idea” though. Then again, a more apt name for the thread title would have been “News which makes the Democratic party or its affiliates look bad”. ---

When you consider the alternative, it’s the only halfway sane course of action. ---

As a blind squirrel finds a nut, Humpy Dumpy finds an actual example of liberal stupidity. Any gun control bill that includes the phrase “specifically named guns” is automatically suspect–and this one makes the same mistake as the last AWB, namely it bans scary-looking guns while illogically leaving untouched a panoply of hunting arms that are functionally equivalent in terms of firepower.
