Her point, a very valid one for those who bother with the entire context, was that those who customarily listen only to Republican lies about the law would still find out what it really is by personal experience once it was in place, and would thereby come to support it. Which, we are finding out, is true, except for the incurably-clueless like \*\*Humpy \*\* and **Shodan**.

Plus the fact that bills get amended all the time, right up until they’re voted on, as I understand it. You really don’t know the final version of the bill until it becomes a law.

I like how the mayor has a big dodge, but Sen. Blumenthal just steps to the side like a boss. His only reaction was when he had to catch the poster board before it was blown off.

Just as he’s saying “Safety, as you know, is paramount”, he almost get clobbered. That’s beautiful timing.

I’m pretty sure nobody here said anything like that. That requires quite the leap. If anything, the liberals on the SDMB are of the opinion that something needs to be done so that raising re-election funds SHOULDN’T be the major part of a Senator’s/Rep’s job. And I saw an awful lot of derision by SDMB liberals over this guy’s whining about his salary.

Do you even actually READ what other people post?

Meh, I’m guessing the camera angle and perspective make that look scarier than it actually was. A couple of feet from a moving train is not a good place to be, but realistically, he wasn’t in any danger.

True enough, I suppose, but that’s because there’s a safety margin built-in to the system. You really shouldn’t be on the yellow line, and you really should keep alert so you know when a train is coming. You don’t encroach on those margins without a good reason, and a press conference isn’t a good reason.

Does anyone know what point he was trying to make; was he touting a good safety record or complaining about a bad one? In either case, he may have done more to raise awareness of safety than he could have hoped.

And let’s have a few more choruses of [Dumb Ways to Die](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJNR2EpS0jw) (and now, [animated GIFs](http://dumbwaystodie.tumblr.com/)).

Another day, [another stupid liberal idea.](http://dailycaller.com/2014/04/21/see-what-theyll-be-teaching-in-the-chicago-public-schools/)

> [@](#):
>
> Chicago public schools are set to introduce a new Afro-centric curriculum, according to a closely-guarded copy obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
>
> The curriculum covers kindergarten through tenth grade and is designed to align with Common Core. It includes a web link to [TheAfrican.com](http://TheAfrican.com), a website whose publisher decries “fake-Jews” and calls the United States a “Zionist-occupied enemy territory.”
>
> The site also claims that the world will end sometime this year and that President Barack Obama is “merely another trick of [the beast of the 4th Kingdom].”
>
> The new Chicago curriculum was announced last December.

> [@](#):
>
> The Chicago curriculum topic discussed at [TheAfrican.com](http://TheAfrican.com) is “The Black Athena,” a book written by historian Martin Bernal. Sixth and ninth grade Chicago students will discuss the book and an accompanying full-length Youtube documentary.
>
> In the work, Bernal claimed that ancient Greeks stole much of its civilization from Egypt, which, Bernal asserts, was populated by blacks. The Chicago curriculum entertains rebuttals to Bernal’s theory but skews heavily in its favor.
>
> Ron Fritze, a historian, the dean of Athens State University, and author of the book “Invented Knowledge,” says that Bernal’s theories are not historically accurate and have no place in Chicago schools.

> [@](#):
>
> Chicago fifth graders will be exposed to another controversial and widely-criticized theory in Ivan van Sertima’s “They Came Before Columbus.” Van Sertima, who taught at Rutgers University, theorized that Africans populated the Americas well before Columbus.
>
> But critics largely panned the work. In a 1977 New York Times book review, archaeologist Glyn Daniel called van Sertima’s work “ignorant rubbish” and labeled it “myth and folklore.”
>
> Fritze is critical as well.
>
> “I and most historians of exploration consider ‘They Came Before Columbus’ to be very wrong in its contentions about African voyages to the Americas,” he told TheDCNF.
>
> Nevertheless, the IAAAS curriculum provides a unit on the work that includes links to seven-part Youtube video series.
>
> Laid out in the curriculum are pictures with arrows drawn to help guide teachers’ lessons. One asks, “Is the water under the ‘boat’ telling us that these people traveled over the ocean from a place with pyramids?”

Any liberals here care to defend the teaching of this nonsense to kids?

IF this curriculum is as the article says it is, absolutely not. It’s totally nutso. IF. Considering that the source is Fucker Carlson’s _Failly Caller_, I’m understandably skeptical about the spin.

But IF this is correct, then no way. Fuck 'em.

Even if it were true, how is that crazier than promoting Creationism as part of a public school curriculum? Egyptians _did_ exist, we know, because they left a bunch of proof lying around for us to find. Greeks too, they left us several important variations in sexual behavior.

But the all mighty, all knowing god of a bunch of ancient nomadic ME sheep-herders?

Even if it’s true … Look, this is a multi-year curriculum, and these people found one link in all the material that that leads to a crazy website. How much other material is there? How many other links are there? Hundreds, probably, maybe thousands. We don’t know, and of course the article makes no attempt whatsoever to put this into any larger context. It simply grabs on the crazy and paints the crazy brush on the whole program instead of noting that is may be 1% or less of the whole program.
