Well, what sort of fiberglass art parades would you like to see? How about… The Love Canal’s five legged menagerie. Massachusetts Noah’s Ark two by two parade (only, it’s rather obvious each pair is same sex) New York City’s ‘Rat Race.’ ---

Vancouver’s doing [Orcas](http://www.orcasinthecity.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vancouver.gallery). They showed parts of the unveiling ceremony on the news, including some shots of the orcas covered with black sheets. I spent a moment wondering why the city was being invaded by Ringwraiths. ---

A few years ago, Cincinnati did pigs, many of them flying pigs, and it was generally fun. But last summer, they did baseball bats, and let’s be frank, baseball bats just aren’t as funny as giant flying pigs. ---

Calgary did cows. It was very successful. Most of the cows were auctioned off and made lots and lots of cash for various charities. ---

Cleveland did guitars, because of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. I think it’s guitars again this year…they had some artists working on their designs in Tower City a few months back. Why they couldn’t switch to some critter we’re well-known for, like, say, a zebra mussel or maybe a Wall-eye. Or pierogis! That might be fun. ---

I just heard that Spokane is doing moose. Of course, they forgot how big moose are, so some of them are not life size. My first thought on hearing this was, "Of course they “forgot” how big moose are–there are no moose in Spokane! Never have been (well, maybe during an ice age). If a city is going to do one of these things, shouldn’t they at least do something that could have some at least tenuous connection to the city? Vancouver does orcas–makes sense. Cincinnati does baseball bats–they are proud of their team (only the Gods know why). Indianapolis = Indy racecars. Okay, I don’t know why Seattle did pigs, and Tulsa doing penguins has the same surreal quality as Spokane’s moose, but in general, there is some connection. On the other hand, I don’t actually live near Spokane, and I have nothing against moose, so live and let live, I suppose. ---

Turrana (Toronto to those without the awful Ontari-accent) also did Moose, and most of them were life-sized. There was some backlash, but they were mostly enjoyed. ---

Tulsa did the penguins in honor of the Tulsa Zoo’s 75th anniversary and the opening of the new African Penguin Habitat. It seemed like a nifty idea at the time. But that was back in 2002, and the damn penguins are still here. I thought they were supposed to be temporary, but apparently not. I haven’t seen one yet that I liked. I just wish the penguins would die, but thats one wish I don’t think I will get. Dammit :rolleyes: ---

I looked at the Tulsa Penguins, (minor league ice hockey, right?) and found a few clever ones, but they seem to have handed out blank fiberglas birds and had people decorate them. Many of them seemed to be corporate advertisements. ---

They even got the original sculptor to make the molds for the fiberglass pigs. So it isn’t completely random after all. Next year, however, they’re making a giant fiberglass tapeworm that wraps around downtown and having everybody paint a segment. Scranton does [Miles of Mules](http://www.surfscranton.com/mules2.asp). It actually looks pretty nice, especially when you don’t expect to see one as you turn the corner. [Penny](http://www.surfscranton.com/mules.asp?num=38) is my favorite. If you ever get to Scranton, check it out. Forward of the midpoint on the mule, the pennies are all heads up. Behind the midpoint, they are all tails up. The hooves, IIRC, are nickels. ---

Here in [NW DC](http://www.pandamaniadc.org/) the fiberglass panda outside my office building is painted to look like a watermelon. This wouldn’t be bad, except that there’s a large wedge of the panda’s back missing that the panda is chowing down on. Creepy.
