> And actually, I’m not at all shocked by the kerfuffle, for whenever the words “Ten Commandments Monument” is in the headline of a news story, I can already predict the details of the news item with startling accuracy. However, [this news story](http://www.kfvs12.com/Global/story.asp?S=12989865) offers some prime-choice quotes:
>
> “What right do they have to prevent my Ten Commandments of the United States of America which I served in the marine corps to defend the right to put it there.”
>
> “We do not appreciate you traveling 300 miles to come down here to tell us how we should live. How we should believe and how we should respect the gospel truth.”
>
> “I’ve never knowingly listened to or face a atheist, I want you to know you make me sick to my stomach.”
>
> So can we please all just stop persecuting the poor Christians for once and for all?

Actually, one of the comments is… insightful:

> When churches are willing to have secular monuments on their pimp- the-idolaters of sky wizards properties

Translated into English, I’m pretty sure that suggests it’s okay to put a 10 Commandments monument in the town square if I can put a Burma Shave sign on the church… which is as it should be.

I would expect a Doper to recognize that that’s not what he said; I feel quite certain that it’s not what he meant. I’m quite sure that he meant the same thing that every asshole who wants to put Moishe Letterman’s Top Ten List on public land says – that it’s somehow at the root of American jurisprudence and culture, and isn’t an “establishment of religion” at all.

It’s bollocks, but a far lesser grade of bollocks than what you suggest.

Let me give this a shot… “When priests wear designer jeans, others will worship the houses of air traffic controllers.”

Regardless of what he meant, there’s no way to parse the phrase “Ten Commandments of the United States of America” without intimating that they are in some way American.

Oddly enough, God was born in America, even before creating the universe.

It turns out Jesus was an anchor baby, because Mary was an illegal.

Really? You’d think they’d have made a ‘Schoolhouse Rock’ about it.

But that would mean that an illegal was virtuous. Heads would assplode.

They did, but they didn’t air it because of threats from, er, oh… somebody.

No, they’re not nuts, they’re just spreading any old lies they can come up with to maximize their chances of achieving more political power come November.
Calling _them_ nuts for sewing fear today is as foolish now as was calling Osama bin Laden nuts after his brilliant attack on 9/11. The insult does nothing to address the actual problem raised by these hyperpartisans.
