Reagan (a former President of a union) fired them because they went on strike, and their contract specifically forbade them from striking. So, how about [putting welfare recipients in prisons converted to dorms](http://thinkprogress.org/2010/08/22/gop-ny-prison/), and then explaining personal hygiene to them? That would be NY governor hopeful Carl Paladino. Joe ---

That link was rather vague. Is he saying unemployment benefits are the same as welfare (not that either one’s recipients deserve to be asked to go to prison camps)? And I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask him for a cite and some statistics backing up his assumption that either group (or both) necessarily come from dysfunctional homes and environments. ---

The air traffic controllers were misled by the facts that the law had not been applied to previous strikes by federal workers, that their strike was in a large part due to the government’s inaction on what were recognized as real safety issues, and by Reagan’s public support of them while campaigning prior to the election. Reagan’s response seems to me to have been largely a “Respect mah authoriteh!” reaction. ---
