Tennessee gun follies.

In anticipation of the upcoming NRA convention, the TN legislature has passed or considered a number of gun laws. For example; they tried to pass a law banning toy or replica firearms anywhere in the vicinity of a school, while continuing to allow real loaded weapons, and they passed a law allowing registered gun owners to carry loaded weapons in parks regardless of local municipalities’ laws or signage.

The NRA itself will require vendors at their gun show to remove the firing pins so that any weapons are inoperable. They also are banning guns at events such as an appearance by Jeff Foxworthy. However, at an event where most of the GOP presidential hopefuls will be speaking, the carrying of loaded weapons will be allowed.

Rachel Maddow reported on this.

He’d also re-register into the Democratic Party. Lincoln was a very poor hater. He wouldn’t fit in with the GOP today.

Not the correct attitude.

[QUOTE=Herbert’s Father]
When I started here, all there was was swamp. All the kings said I was daft to build a castle in a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show’em. It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third one. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up.

Oh, don’t worry about them! I’m sure all the GOP candidates will be packing, too, and everybody knows that a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun. When the shooting starts, it’ll be real clear who’s who.

A comic specializing in redneck jokes addressing an NRA event? Someone should have thought twice about that . . .

To expand upon what I said upthread about Lincoln being a Democrat today.

If you think the Civil War is over, think again.

> The emancipation of the slaves that accompanied the North’s victory ushered in, as Abraham Lincoln had hoped, a new birth of freedom, but the old order also managed to adapt itself to the new circumstances. The subjugation of and violence against African Americans continued apace, particularly after U.S. Army troops withdrew from the South at the end of Reconstruction. Black voting was suppressed. The Southern labor system retained, in altered form, its most distinctive characteristic: unfree labor. As Douglas A. Blackmon has demonstrated in his Pulitzer Prize-winning study Slavery by Another Name, numerous corporations—many of them headquartered in the North—relied heavily on the labor of thousands of black prisoners, many serving long sentences for minor crimes or no crimes at all.

**snip**

> [@](#):
>
> Even today, one of America’s most fundamental problems is that the alliance between the current form of Southern labor and the current form of New York finance is with us still. The five states that have no minimum wage laws of their own are in the South: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Southern-based corporations such as Walmart are among the leading opponents of workers’ right to organize, and as Walmart has expanded into the North and West, so have the “right-to-work” statutes of Southern states been enacted by Republican governments in the Midwest.
>
> The Southernization of the Republican Party and the increasing domination of Wall Street’s brand of shareholder capitalism over the nation’s economic life have combined to erode both the income and the power of U.S. workers. Unions are anathema to Wall Street and the GOP. Federal regulations empowering consumers and employees are opposed by both.

The GOP is not the party of Lincoln. The Democrats of today might be willing to give up Andrew Jackson in trade for Abraham Lincoln.

Tricky. The Stupid Republican part might be the over-reaction to the judge’s leniency. Right Wing Hate Radio is absolutely up in arms over this, and demanding the judge’s recall. There might be no “good guy” here at all, and Republican stupidity might be on both sides.
