A recent series of surveys demonstrates it clearly, according to [this article from The Atlantic.](http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/05/emily-farris-is-not-running-for-president/393443/) The director of an outfit named Public Policy Polling had told a reporter named Paul Egan that Michigan governor Rick Snyder’s showing of a 5 percent favorability in a Republican primary Presidential candidate rating was just background noise – almost any name might get that percentage. They decided to test the theory by putting Egan’s named in as a potential Presidential candidate in their next poll. Sure enough, Egan outscored Snyder with a favorable rating of six percent on the next poll. Political scientiest Emily Farris heard about it and decided it would be a hoot to have her name in the next PPP Presidential poll and see what kind of numbers she got. Well, she scored only a 3 percent favorability rating. And a 20 percent unfavorability rating. That’s right, a huge percentage of Republican voters, well above background levels, disliked Farris for having a female name. Literally the ONLY thing they knew about her was that she was female, and they disliked her for that. Pigs. Just. Fucking. Pigs. ---

The other day I read [this article](http://wehuntedthemammoth.com/2015/05/12/furious-about-furiosa-misogynists-are-losing-it-over-charlize-therons-starring-role-in-mad-max-fury-road/) about these crazy (I mean, really crazy) misogynists and how the Charlize Theron character in the new _Mad Max_ movie is making them even crazier than usual: women are NOT supposed to be in any kind of dominant, heroic, physically demanding role, and the fact that there is this new movie out is just a sign of the fall of civilization or some such… ---

Maybe this should go in the GOP Candidates thread, but it sure strikes me as sorta stupid. [Scott Walker touts his foreign policy cred: he has been to _six_ countries!](http://crooksandliars.com/2015/05/scott-walker-im-most-qualified-foreign) (Germany, France, Spain, the UK, China, Japan and Israel). Says he wants to do foreign policy like Reagan. (Does that mean secretly funding illegal wars?) ---

Well that is pretty dumb - BUT… It might be an interesting angle to explore IF you are able to frame the question / study properly. Eg: Selection of a name as wanting to belong to / be a part of the community, and what that means vs choosing a “unique” name and what broader parenting style this means vis a vis wanting to be different. It _could_ be something interesting to explore with a view to seeing if the former is more cognizant of community standards / punishments / mores than the latter? Yeah - kinda tortured way of saying things ------- ---
