> Confused Republicans voting against their own self-interest is the only way they win. There are massive amounts of people in this country so anti-Obama and anti-liberal they’ve stopped processing any other political thoughts. Some members of my own family are perfect examples of this.
>
> My brother is on disability. My father draws a social security survivor’s benefit check from when my mom passed away. And they are TERRIFIED… terrified I tell you, that because Obama is in the white house, they are going to have their benefits taken away. Basically, anything bad that might happen to them politically, is Obama’s fault. Anything good is because of the Republicans. I tried to explain that if anyone wants to reduce SS and disability benefits, it’s the Republicans, but they just look at me like I’m crazy and say something about how Obama is still a secret Muslim. I got the exact same look of befuddlement and pivot to random conspiracy theory when I tried to explain that Obamacare is not a health plan you sign up for, it’s a law that affects all health plans.

I can confirm this, I have relatives who think in exactly this way.

Some of Carson’s stories that have come out remind me a bit of a guy that I used to work with. It took me quite a while to figure out that the coworker was telling stories of his past, not as they actually happened, but how he wished they had actually happened.

For instance, the Yale prank story. He may or may not have been registered for the class in question. He may or may not have fallen for the prank. He knew enough about the prank, though, to be able to spin a story where he comes out looking like a heroic figure doing the right thing.

Didn’t he break a guy’s femur with a broomstick once?

That’s…idealistic. Even if one agreed with the general idea of the REINS Act, $100 000 000 is very little money for Congress, and 70 days is very little time.

I wonder how often regulations are tweaked in one way or another.

A few times a year? A few times a month? A few times a day? What does it cost to determine the economic cost of a regulatory change? Certainly that determination cannot be made for free.

Would we, overall, end up spending more by researching the cost of every little change than we would save on the ones that are prevented?

That isn’t just Carly – that legislation has been passed by the House on a few occasions. Republicans have this complete hard-on for deregulating everything which demonstrates a faith in both mankind and the invisible hand of capitalism that beggars belief. For example, every Republican candidate on the podium in last night’s debate wanted to take the[Dodd-Frank Act](http://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/13/dodd-frank-act-affect-me.asp?header_alt=true) out back behind the woodshed and shoot it; apparently believing that all those bankers and mortgage brokers who came within a hair of destroying economy only 7 years ago have all evaluated the light taps on the wrists that they received and will never do it again.

And it’s always a given that the environment can always take another hit for the team. It’s not like the EPA regulations have made any difference at all between the air and water quality in the 70’s and today. Companies can be trusted to make sure that oil wells and pipelines don’t leak into aquifers,[because it’s practically unheard of for corporations to put profit ahead of responsible behavio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Canal)r.

Honestly, Republicans are so damned trusting that I don’t understand how any of them got out of grade school without taking candy from corporate strangers in windowless vans.

> Perhaps the solution will be for the Republicans to gain full control of the House, the Senate, and the presidency for a couple of election cycles, at the end of which there might very well be a popular revolt including many of the swing voters and dunderheads sweeping in the Democrats.

You’re advocating [accelerationism.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerationism) I can see the appeal from a place of frustration, but it’s always struck me spiteful. Plus, it doesn’t stick. Obama was the result of a backlash against Bush and pals. Then there was a backlash against him, and America may end up with President Trump. I don’t expect Kansas or the South to turn lib anytime soon.
