Does anybody actually _understand_ America? Which one? Hell, I don’t even understand Texas, and that’s only a chunk of it. Thought maybe I understood Minnesota, but then they elected Jesse Ventura to be governor, and that went right out the window. ---

Senate Republicans were totally within their rights to withhold their consent from Garland and prevent him from having a hearing. They realized that such an important nomination could fundamentally shift the direction of the court for decades to come, and that voters should have a say. People saying that McConnell and his fellow Senate Republicans abdicated their constitutional duty don’t know that [the Republicans they had no duty to do so.](https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/05/senate-obama-merrick-garland-supreme-court-nominee/482733/) You know John Roberts, the current conservative Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? In 1992, when Roberts was a Bush administration lawyer, George H.W. Bush nominated him for a seat on the Appeals Court. Then-Senator Joe Biden, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, [declined to give Mr. Roberts a hearing, in the hopes that Bill Clinton would be elected, and would be able to appoint liberal judges to the appeals courts.](http://www.nytimes.com/1992/09/01/us/waiting-for-clinton-democrats-hold-up-court-confirmations.html) As we know, Clinton was elected, and his gambit paid off: Roberts’s nomination expired, and he returned to private law practice.
