Paul Ryan speaks candidly, on-camera

> [@](#):
>
> Referring to Trump’s newfound willingness to talk to Democrats about possible changes to the Affordable Care Act, Ryan told CBS, “I don’t want that to happen.” The Speaker added that if the White House were to pursue bipartisan policymaking, “that’s hardly a conservative thing.”
>
> This has all the makings of a Michael Kinsley Moment: a politician making a mistake by accidentally telling the truth.
>
> Indeed, even some Republicans were taken aback by Paul Ryan’s unexpected candor. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said on Twitter this morning, “We have come a long way in our country when the speaker of one party urges a president NOT to work with the other party to solve a problem.”

> House Speaker Paul Ryan slipped up and said what his critics have long assumed: he doesn't want to work with Democrats on bipartisan solutions.

I’d be okay with industrial regulations containing sunset clauses by default, unless congress votes specifically for renewal. They can call witnesses to explain why a particular regulation should be renewed or let to expire, with the amusing extra requirement that any member of congress who voted for or against the legislation in the first place and wants to now change his or her position must explain why they are doing so.

Alongside a note from Lennie Jarratt, the group’s project manager for transforming education, the package contains a book called Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming and a 10-minute video about using their guidance.

I’m a chemistry professor at a small liberal-arts university, and I got one of these in the mail today. It currently graces my trash can, with the CD-ROM bent in half in token of my respect.

- It is likely the ‘or’ in the above quote was supposed to be an ‘and’, but given the alternative-facts nature of the GOP these days I am not in the mood to be charitible about such ‘mistakes’.

Yeah, sounds like a great idea. “_Hey, look, 14-2§8(2025935/9) has expired. Now we can save money by dumping our dioxin in the river again. Remind me to earmark a hefty contribution to Congressman Canfield’s[sup]_[/sup] re-election fund, since he was instrumental in stalling the review process until the sunset clause kicked in\*.”

Seems as though a few regulations are indeed petty, but many others are probably not suited for sunsetting.

Even if it is supposed to be ‘and’, that likely implies that the woman should have her husband’s approval instead.

Stooping to the level of Scientology Incorporated. (They spammed charter schools around here with library sets of ElRon’s collected works a few years back. Probably “persuaded” church members to pay for/donate them.)

It should be noted that their latest anti-freedom-and-privacy strategery has been to focus on attacking the medical professionals rather than the dainty lasses themselves. The offending text in the senate bill reads

> [@"\[Iowa](#):
>
> ([http://coolice.legis.iowa.gov/Legislation/87thGA/Bills/SenateFiles/Introduced/SF53.html](http://coolice.legis.iowa.gov/Legislation/87thGA/Bills/SenateFiles/Introduced/SF53.html))"]6 35 7. A cause of action for injunctive relief to prevent a
> 7 1 physician from performing abortions may be maintained against a
> 7 2 physician who has intentionally violated this chapter by the
> 7 3 woman upon whom the abortion was performed or attempted to be
> 7 4 performed, by the spouse of the woman, by a parent or guardian
> 7 5 of the woman if the woman is less than eighteen years of age or
> 7 6 unmarried at the time the abortion was performed or attempted
> 7 7 to be performed, by a current or former licensed health care
> 7 8 provider of the woman, by a county attorney with appropriate
> 7 9 jurisdiction, or by the attorney general.
> 7 10 8. A woman upon whom an abortion was performed or was
> 7 11 attempted to be performed shall not be subject to prosecution
> 7 12 for a violation of this chapter.

So, technically, the bill does not infringe on the rights of women, it only criminalizes women’s health providers.

Well, maybe there can be a demarcation between industrial laws that permanently ban activities (until the law is repealed) and industrial regulations that ban activities until the regulation expires, the distinction possibly being that laws are for activities likely to get people killed, as is the case for dioxin-dumping.

It’s not _automatically_ specious to say that regulation dampens innovation, though I’ve seen a whole lotta specious claims of it lately.

Try to get proponents of the law to say abortion is not a medical procedure (probably not difficult to do, if you choose your phrasing carefully). Then it doesn’t have to be performed by medical professionals.

You can’t threaten to take the medical license from someone who doesn’t have one. The procedure itself, or at least the basic D&C version, could probably be performed safely by someone with the right instruments and a few months’ training.

I’m just looking for possible workarounds.
